My favorite dive casino still has to be Ellis Island. It is no longer as cheap as it used to be (for 25 years their house beers were just $1 but now they are $2.50 though the size did increase from 12 oz to 16 oz). Plus they have the best dinner specials in Vegas.

A full rack of baby back ribs with coleslaw, corn, and garlic bread for $13.99. Half a chicken and half a rack of ribs with the same sides $11.99. A 16 oz ribeye with a loaded baked potato, green beans, and garlic bread $15.99. Sirloin steak and egg special served with home fried potatoes and garlic bread $6.99. Top sirloin steak dinner $7.99. Oh, everything comes with your choice of soup or salad. They also offer a full selection of hickory smoked meats (cooked 10 hours or more) at very reasonable prices plus they have a full on-site brewery with a dozen house brewed beers and dozens of other drinks. If you get a players club card and gamble $5 they you get $2 off your meal.

Like I said, I've been hitting Ellis Island up for 20 years.

I've never gone to Vegas and it's not really a place I'm interested in visiting.

I'm not against going, but it would never be somewhere I would make an effort to visit.

But I hate gambling and casinos give me some pretty intense anxiety. The sounds....the lack of windows....the carpet.

I am not big on gambling either, I mostly do blackjack as it has a low burn rate (meaning I can play a while without burning through my whole budget), but Vegas is still fun for the eats (and some of the best eats are actually pretty cheap), the shows (free or discount tickets are easy to come by), and the other fun stuff (BF listed a bunch in the original post).

Heck, most of the last 20 years I'd go once a year and made it an art figuring out the best cheap hotel, the best cheap steak or ribs or ribeye special, where to get the strongest drinks for cheap, where to get the $0.99 shrimp cocktails, how to get into the best party pools free, where to get half price show tickets, etc... Hell, just sight seeing is fun in Vegas because there are so many free shows and attractions.

NOLA is fun with awesome food without any casinos ♡

The Platinum Hotel next door to The Ellis Island (one block off the strip) looks amazing for $180 per night weekend rate. Jacuzzi tub in the bathroom plus separate shower, a full kitchen with all pots, pans, and plates, a large living room with fire place, washer and dryer, a private balcony with views of the strip, a private bedroom... plus a spa and giant pool complex at the resort. The sofa in the living room even folds out to a bed if you have kids or friends. Free parking and wifi.

Circa is the brand new hotel that just opened on Fremont Street. The prices seem absurd for downtown and they are trying to be haute taute by not allowing families, having a dress code for several of their venues, but the owner is deep in debt so I imagine once the shine wears off prices and standards will fall.

Having eaten there the food is good especially given the price. Ellis Island is a relatively small casino so they lure people in with cheap food and drinks. Also, they have karaoke and on Friday or Saturday nights the place is bumping especially about midnight when all the waitresses, card dealers, and other staff switch shifts at the casinos. Locals love Ellis Island for the cheap prices and big portions so they flood the place.

Circa's grand opening was just five months ago. It was the first all knew casino and resort hotel in downtown Vegas since the 1980's. The Freemont Street Experience (a walkable pedestrian mall) is kind of the new strip as the covered it and put in a ton of attractions. It has really changed the look and feel of the historic downtown casino district.

I've been bugging my wife for us to go back to Vegas. I usually stay at either the Augustus Tower at Caesars or the Bellagio with a fountan view. I've stayed at Paris but I dont care for the rooms. The Quad is a shithole where you spend 20 minutes waiting for an elevator. TI is decently priced for being on the strip and they regularly have 2 nights for 1 specials but its too far away from the center of the strip. The Luxor is really falling apart and its downright dirty. The Rio is ok but its across the interstate so you have to take a bus to go places. South Point is way way too far away. I have to say that the newer addition to the Golden Nugget is the best value to cleanliness room I've stayed in.

I will meet up with you guys during that weekend but I positive my wife, step kids, and my mother in law (possibly even sister in law with her hubby and kids) will all want to go because my brother in law lives there with his husband. Hell, we might even just stay at the BIL's place because why pay $400 for a hotel room when we can get free room and board?
