The Natives have a harder time breaking down the sugar in alcohol that the Europeans had been producing since the 12th century.

It got them drunk quickly and I believe it was used to take their land via signed deed since the Natives could not comprehend owning and therefore selling anything.

Yet, they still knew it was their homeland.

Yet, they still knew it was their homeland.

Of course. I did not mean to lose sight of that in my post. They absolutely believed the land belonged to everyone. The birds and trees were their brothers and sisters. Their relation to everything is unparalleled spiritually.

They also treated the settlers with more dignity and respect than they were given. They saved the early settlers from starvation.

@Dove

Lol, things started going wrong when Jesus movies were taken off Easter times movies.

I learned about Jesus from the movie, King of King's.

Apparently it's wrong for our TV to teach the Jesus story.

The decline has been going on since the very early 80s... a solid 40 years. Your generation are reaping the benefits.

Aussie aborigines were forbidden to drink but there was a political movement to give them drinking rights which they got ... maybe 1950s or 1960s...then it was banned and then there was such an outrage, the ban was lifted.

The facts are with aborigines it wasn't in their culture to drink alcohol, they didn't make it.

It is one of their biggest downfalls...

They (aborigines) WANTED drinking rights and it was given to them.

I would say our natives are the same as yours... not many are motivated to improve their lot or dominated by their elders to their lessers detriment.

Of course there are always ones who do advance to the 21 St Century which all of us need to do.

I think it depends on the time period. Definitely, the Native American tribes quickly became hostile to the settlers. They were a threat.

The earth is alive and they knew this. They treated her like a mother and everything on her like a brother and sister.

The energy of the ocean is the most grounding experience you will have on this planet.

There is a direct link between poverty and addiction.

We had prohibition here where alcohol was outlawed. If memory serves me correct, 90% of people who drank were still drinking. Mostly because the European immigrants were already familiar with distilling alcohol.

But it’s outlawed when people see how detrimental alcohol is to a family. I’m sure a battered wife convinced someone to outlaw it completely because she was strapped with 4 kids and no means to support herself married to a degenerate bastard.

To this day, the seashore is the best place for me.

Same. A nice rise in the sand is my favorite place to park my ass on a bad day. Watching the waves is some of the best medicine and therapy available.

It was the women's movement in the late 19th and early 20th century that fought for Prohibition. It simply wasn't the answer to the problem. It just created a black market for it.

They did a trade.. alcohol for land is what you are saying... that as far as I am concerned was tough luck for them.

If a person buys a house in the 1980s for $40,000 and it gets resold in 2022 for 1 million, then the former owner can't come back and ask for more money.

Natives sold land they didn't own... yes they occupied it but they didn't own it.

As citizens all people can go to work, buy a house and pay off the mortgage... that is what citizens are free to do in EVERY western country.

We are supposed to be EQUAL.

Yep, the sea breeze whipping through your hair, the scent of the salty sea in the air, the sun sparkling off the water, the warm sand in my toes...I love it. Except for seagulls, I hate those bastards. lol

No, they were given alcohol and then presented with paperwork. This is why they have been given casinos that are not taxed as reparations. The untaxed funds are being distributed to anyone with a certain percentage of Native blood. I’m pretty sure the deeper roots the bigger the check from what I’ve heard.

Most of the people who lean left (I’m a moderate) agree there is a direct link between the underprivileged communities and addiction. The drugs are rampant there. The Republicans decided to wage war on them when it started showing up on wall street and in their homes via spoiled rich brats years ago.

Now every couple of decades I get to watch police murder one of them on television and endure the deadly riots that follow. I will support equality for this very reason till my dying breath.

The aboriginal women organised alcohol free zones protecting the kids from being raped by drunks.. in SOME tribes, not all.

Alcohol abuse is common and bad. They are not functioning alcoholics... your native Americans are FAR more advanced than our aborigines though.

But it's the same problem everywhere... men abusing alcohol and women too and of course all the negative problems that entails... one being babies born with mental defects.

We tried over pricing alcohol and cigarettes but all that does is increase petty crime as the addicts rob and mug and rob people.

Alcohol can bring out the absolute worst in people.

So can drugs.

It’s just too bad that we are able to find the money to fund the programs for the people when it’s too late instead of dealing with the problem before it starts.

The spike in homelessness should be a huge clue as to why we should be focused on our children and their education and care now more than ever.

The Prime Minister of my country Albanese was brought up in state housing by a single mother living in poverty.

His mother went to Italy when she was young, had an affair with a man who wouldn't marry her because he was promised to someone else...

So sorry, if I can't sympathise with people who don't take advantage of the 21 century.

I lean left but like to think I am middle ground.

There are always going to be persons stronger than ourselves and more successful, better looking, etc; as well as those who are weaker, not as successful...

What is it that we're supposed to do with those people that aren't as capable. That is the fundamental question.

My fiancé feels the same way…

His family is wealthy, he had a happy childhood and his parents were married until his mother passed.

But he works his fucking ass off and is a minority, so it’s harder to argue this point with him.

Not everyone does. That is a huge advantage. How about people who are upper middle class that don't amount to much? What's their excuse?

It’s a HUGE advantage. I’m willing to bet good money that the child from the midle class home experienced what is now being more commonly referred to generational trauma in their home.

Or maybe they had it too easy, everything was handed to them. They don't know the value of hard work.

I have a distant cousin who was raised upper middle class like this… she ended up in rehab and all the ghetto bitches told her she had “white girl problems” LOL

But honestly, her mother’s family is dysfunctional and her mom disassociated and never dealt with anything. Mom’s father was a raging alcoholic and she worked hard to get away from that.

Disfunction is poison to any family lineage.

Yeah, I just can't sympathize with those people who have everything and can't get their shit together. And they blame everyone else for being losers. Women suck, working sucks, etc...

That stint in rehab was a glimpse of much bigger issue. It always is.
