USC — along with other private institutions such as Columbia and Pomona — cracked down on violations of campus rules with police force and student arrests [when students have protested against Israel's actions in Gaza].

In the public University of California system, by contrast, UCLA, UC Berkeley and UC Santa Barbara have used a far lighter hand, tolerating students who flouted bans on overnight camping and other rules as long as they remained peaceful and did not impede campus operations or interfere with teaching and learning.

Part of the difference is rooted in the legal requirement for public universities to honor the 1st Amendment, which does not apply to private institutions. But not all public campuses have refrained from an aggressive response. The University of Texas at Austin, for instance, sent in armed state troopers who arrested more than 50 people this week for staging what witnesses said was a peaceful protest. The university president, defending his response as a legitimate action to maintain campus order, is facing a faculty vote of no confidence.

Protest, that is, publicly letting your position be known on a political topic is free speech rights certainly. What I find bizarre is that (at least here at Columbia) there are demands made that the college be compliant with the students point of view. Personally, I would explain to the demanders that they are students at the institution and free to matriculate elsewhere if they are not satisfied with their purchase.

How about setting up a voter registration drive on these campuses and actually voting since most college age people don't even bother to vote yet are they have time to set up tents and cook hot dogs while protesting all day. The only way to change the policies and aid to Israel is to vote these old relics out of office.

Yeah good okay.
Now do removing the obstacles put in place by republicans and democrats to keep independents and third parties off the ballots. And while we're at it can we decouple the corporate media from the duopoly so they don't ALWAYS push the lie that voters *must* choose one or the other of the wholly corrupt major parties?

Besides, what good does voting do as long as we *know* our elected "leaders" don't actually care what their own constituencies prefer? Study after study has proven that. Whether a bill gets to the floor of congress to be voted on, and whether or not it passes, tracks nicely with what the donor class wants. With what the voters themselves want? Not so much.

Stop pretending we live in a democracy, or even a representative republic.

We absolutely do not.

Not an unfair point. They should most certainly vote.

...and they should vote to support radical theocrats like Hamas' YaYa Sin-War (Yes folks, that's his actual name), and the supreme leader of Iran..Ali Khamenei (a religious nutball like Jerry Falwell).

WoW! you couldn't possibly have picked a less perfect "parallel" to the current situation.
..Then, students were protesting a completely insane war which ultimately cost 58 thousand American soldiers their lives and countless others with lasting injury, and that not to mention about 10X that for opposition fighters and countless civilians. It was a protest in which students and many others in this nation opposed the conservative elements in government who were willing to sacrifice those lives for no actual worthy cause.
.. Today, it is the students supporting the radical conservatives in a conflict and making demands that the institution that accepted their sorry asses as students also comply with their view. Absurd, however I would stop short of shooting them. Because - isn't that what this is all about...demented religious monsters and their persistent efforts to annihilate a specific group of people, anyone who doesn't agree with them and isn't them (genocide), as they have for 1400 years?
.. Radical conservatism=total intolerance=MAGA=islam=a giant wreaking pile of shit.

Nika Shakarami

Nika was just 16 years old when she disappeared during protests against Iran's strict dress code for women [Atash Shakarami]
An Iranian teenager was sexually assaulted and killed by three men working for Iran's security forces, a leaked document understood to have been written by those forces says.
It has let us map what happened to 16-year-old Nika Shakarami who vanished from an anti-regime protest in 2022.
Her body was found nine days later. The government claimed she killed herself.
We put the report's allegations to Iran's government and its Revolutionary Guards. They did not respond.
Marked "Highly Confidential", the report summarises a hearing on Nika's case held by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) - the security force that defends the country's Islamic establishment. It includes what it says are the names of her killers and the senior commanders who tried to hide the truth.
It contains disturbing details of events in the back of an undercover van in which security forces were restraining Nika. These include:
  • One of the men molested her while he was sitting on her
  • Despite being handcuffed and restrained, she fought back, kicking and swearing
  • An admission that this provoked the men to beat her with batons
There are numerous fake Iranian official documents in circulation, so the BBC spent months checking every detail with multiple sources.
Our extensive investigations indicate the papers we obtained do chronicle the teenager's last movements.
Short presentational grey line

[BBC]
Nika Shakarami's disappearance and death were widely reported, and her picture has become synonymous with the fight by women in Iran for greater freedoms. As street protests spread across Iran in the autumn of 2022, her name was shouted by crowds furious at the country's strict rules on the compulsory veil [hijab].

Lest we forget islamic Iran, Hamas' puppetmaster, does not restrict its abuse of women to Iran.

Virtually ignored by US media in 2003.

No it wasn't. It was all over the media then.

PS: she was mentally deficient (not all there mentally) and took action she had no business taking and wound up dead for it. I will guarantee that if she hadn't been there she would not have been killed. I have limited sympathy for those who knowingly put themselves in harm's way and suffer the consequence. Like take mountain climbers for instance. Do you really feel bad for them when they fall 10K feet to their death? I know I do not.

Oh, of course. It was her fault they purposely ran over her. And of course it was really okay since she supposedly had mental health issues.

At least I can admit it is tragic when ANY innocent person is murdered, whether that person is Jewish or Muslim or something else.

Well, Lotus she was in a foreign country, flirting with heavy equipment being operated by professionals. Ran in front of one. Got boo-boo'd. Yes it was her fault.
.. Personally, if a non-resident non-citizen came here (USA) to rabbel rouse it wouldn't matter to me if I agreed with their protest - it wouldn't be any of their fucking business. Let people make whatever protests they want in their own country. Take Nika, for example. She was protesting the tyranny of islam and was brutally murdered for it by muslims. She did that in her own country.

Some people swallow the kool-aid, I mean gulp it down, and still think they're smart.
