“Flood the zone with shit”: How misinformation overwhelmed our democracy

The impeachment trial didn’t change any minds. Here’s why.

On Wednesday, the Senate voted to

of charges of abuse of power and obstruction of justice.
Despite all the incontrovertible facts at the center of this story, it was always inevitable that this process would change very few minds. No matter how clear a case the Democrats made, it was always highly likely that no single version of the truth was ever going to be accepted.

This fact underscores a serious problem for our democratic culture. No amount of evidence, on virtually any topic, is likely to move public opinion one way or the other. We can attribute some of this to rank partisanship — some people simply refuse to acknowledge inconvenient facts about their own side.

But there’s another, equally vexing problem. We live in a media ecosystem that overwhelms people with information. Some of that information is accurate, some of it is bogus, and much of it is intentionally misleading. The result is a polity that has increasingly given up on finding out the truth. As

put it in a New York Times piece, “people are numb and disoriented, struggling to discern what is real in a sea of slant, fake, and fact.” This is partly why an earth-shattering historical event like a president’s impeachment did very little to move public opinion.

The core challenge we’re facing today is information saturation and a hackable media system. If you follow politics at all, you know how exhausting the environment is. The sheer volume of content, the dizzying number of narratives and counternarratives, and the pace of the news cycle are too much for anyone to process.

One response to this situation is to walk away and tune everything out. After all, it takes real effort to comb through the bullshit, and most people have busy lives and limited bandwidth. Another reaction is to retreat into tribal allegiances. There’s Team Liberal and Team Conservative, and pretty much everyone knows which side they’re on. So you stick to the places that feed you the information you most want to hear.

TLDR, The GOP is baffled by it's own bullshit.

There's another component to this that Vox didn't touch on: As legacy media spins, slants, omits facts, and includes sometimes outright fabrications, there's now a broader array of information sources which exposes the malfeasance. This is why legacy media is tanking. It distorts stories, hides facts contrary to its preferred narratives, and amplifies narratives contrary to the facts.

Example: the "very fine people" hoax. Legacy media runs various politicians and pundits talking about that, but they don't run the entire clip. Why? Because the entire clip blows the hoax out of the water. They don't want viewers hearing the entire thing. But the entire clip is out there. People see the entire thing, and they see that the legacy media essentially lied.

And when an outlet engages in shit like that as a matter of practice, people tune out and migrate to the places where they got the truth that that outlet distorted, rather than sticking around for more distortions.

That's why nobody cared about the impeachment -- it was bullshit, and while legacy media did everything possible to legitimize it, the facts were out there -- and people were already abandoning legacy media in favor of sources of impartial fact.

A lot of what you say may be true, but, the problem is, there is just as much bullshit "out there" as there is in the MSM. And far too many CONs are completely incapable of doing research and they believe stupid shit at an alarming rate. For instance, they believe Trump is a Christian, and Stormy Daniels was a business partner of some sort.

How could anyone that's ever watched an entire football game believe that stat?

But, but, but Lily...it's on the interwebs...
And that's his point, about too many people accepting something simply because the internet, or Aaron or Tucker or Trump said it.

Too snowflake; Didn't read

You should read it. Your hero is a convicted rapist/felon, to add to his other fine traits. By the way, when do you think Trumps new policies will take hold. Specifically gas, food, goods, air travel, housing, all becoming way cheaper. This is why he’s your hero. Right?

I agree. People believe all sorts of nonsense.
We all do or have at some point, at least I have. I think it's the ability to accept that it's not factual, when you are presented the truth, that separates us from the low information voters.

He's an adjudicated rapist. Not criminally convicted.

However, I'm not a pedantic douchebag, like uhm, you, so I understand what the other posters meant.
It's more like you are just as disingenuous as they are and you don't like it when people call you on it.

Words matter so the difference between convicted and adjudicated is significant.

They do matter. But we're not in a court of law where they REALLY matter. It's a forum, ffs. Cool your jets, Captain Pedant.

Are you familiar with the difference between a criminal and civil matter you shit headed imbecile?
Are you suggesting that a Jury of Trump's peers did not find him culpable for sexual assault and defamation? Lets see your evidence of that.

I'm saying that the bar for evidence was set so low that even a lunatic without any verifiable evidence could meet it, and did.

I wouldn't fuck the ugly cunt that accused Trump of raping her with Admin's shriveled dick.
Why is it always the most hideous of freakshows that libtards always want to believe were raped by some affluent guy that would fuck any woman he wanted?

it's as if they want to see how far they can push the envelope over the eyes of these idiots to study whether they will still have their support or not.

No, he can't fuck any woman he wants. There are celebrities that have turned him down. He's gross. He has never been married to a high status female.
