I LOVE Bowie. I think he was brilliant but I’ve always been confused about Major Tom. Was he referring to drugs? Like was Major Tom the drug?

Anyhow, I love this song

Ziggy Stardust for my Bowie fix.....

I have an old MP3 unit with a ton of Bowie stuff including demos for thing off that album. I take on plane trips as they come

Years ago Lady Gaga "channeled" Ziggy Stardust at an awards show........I thought she killed it.

I always thought Major Tom was just a cog in a large industrial planetary exploration complex.
Although a trained astronaut…….it seems as he is kind of talked down to.
Even the matter of fact tone from ground control after an issue arises kind of suggests he is expendable.

From the OP’s opening statement
“Non troll thread assholes”
Who's trolling? I'm just laughing at the idea that any conservative could understand and embrace Bowie when conservatives revile everything he represents.

Oh and, there is nothing to figure out about Space Oddity - it's all right there.

Bowie's Major Tom was based on director Stanley Kubrick's Dr. David Bowman, who was played by Keir Dullea in the film 2001: A Space Odyssey. Bowie began writing “Space Oddity” six months after seeing the movie, which came out in UK cinemas in May 1968.

He also appeared in "Space Oddity", "Ashes to Ashes", "Hallo Spaceboy", "Blackstar" and a few other songs. He was one of Bowie's personae like Ziggy Stardust and The Thin White Duke.

Personally, one of my favorite musicians of all time.

Ever see "Man Who Fell To Earth"?

or "The Hunger"?

Yes...back then. Remember the scene of the limo driving through the forest, slowly down the winding grey strip.
. That one image made a clear statement that high technology and nature weren't necessarily incompatible. There was something very tranquil and non-intrusive about it.

They filmed a bunch of that in Lamy, New Mexico. It's an abandoned coal town.

The thing about the limo ride in the country scene I loved was Bowie seeing the old timey frontier family around the camp fire looking at his Limo like it was a UFO, as he gazes back in mild curiosity at them in passing. That time/space continuum deal.

I grew up listening to Bowie. Politics have zero to do with this discussion. Fuck off
As I have many a time pointed out, the term conservative isn't solely a political term.
. PS: You and the Atomic PD were not even poopin in yer diapies yet in the late 60's.
You have no idea what Bowie's impact was or became socially at the time.

So because I’m not ancient like you, I can’t appreciate Bowie’s music? Shut up

I’m fairly certain we all “talk to ourselves” in some fashion.
. Well, you know it's interesting what form that may take. Here you have a person who thinks Tom is about drugs who comes from a drug culture. Another who is looked down upon and disrespected in their life so they imagine Tom is looked down upon (talked down to). ... then
a third who sees Tom as a man you had simply had enough of it all - The accolades, the science, the race, the getting things done, and decides to leave life (the World, as it is called) for the peace and stillness. Though he's gone 10,000 miles he's feeling very still, and there's nothing he can do.
