It was a few days into our 3rd grade school year. The Principal brings Elton to our classroom, speaks quietly to The Teacher and he leaves. The teacher introduces Elton to the class explains his family just moved into our school district and he is going be a part of our class. He looks like most of us, some minor variation on white, albeit slightly scruffier than us on average. Teacher brings him to sit next to me in my two passenger desk, one of the last vacant seats, dashing my hopes of having my classroom solo desk Joe Cool independence. He’s shy and reserved but is friendly enough after a bit, we team up for recess and lunch, after a few weeks he invites me over to come see his house that was very close to school, we get there and it’s an older house a little run down, I can tell they are still moving in and fixing the place up. I meet his dad and uncle and talk to them for a little while, Dad’s reserved and quiet like Elton is, the uncle more outgoing, they’re patching some sheetrock and painting the kitchen. A week or two later in class Elton’s uncle came to the room with the principal to pick him up, uncle recognizes me and calls my name and says hello and that Elton will be back soon after the family emergency. We didn’t see Elton for 2 long weeks, the story comes out that the uncle had kidnapped Elton and hit the road with him, of course we all knew that was unusual , and I don’t think anyone of us in class initially understood the implications of that at the time. We were told the day before his return to leave him alone and to not ask him about his absence. When he walks into class the next day he looked pale and more withdrawn. Of course asap at lunchtime myself and his other classmate buddies were peppering him about where he went, what he did did he get to go to Disneyland? He kept his mouth shut and told us he wasn’t supposed to talk about it…I think he was on the verge of tears when the teacher chased us away from him under threat of death or no ice cream or something. Several days later the story broke about his uncle being charged with “contributing to the delinquency of a minor” None of us kids knew what that meant, my parents like other parents tried explaining what that phrase meant without any salacious details. Not long after the story broke, in class during quiet reading time Elton sitting right next to me started shaking, whimpering soon he was bawling and screaming, my new buddy was literally breaking down in front of me and the whole class, the teacher quickly escorted Elton out of the room to the office. I never saw him again after that, all we were told was he was not going to be back in class with us. As I grew up and became more aware of the world and the evil things humans are capable and gaining understanding of what that uncle probably did to my desk partner and friend, I remember going through a mixture of emotions, fear, anger, revulsion and rage sometimes lots of rage, the kind of rage that may inspire me to introduce some punk that thinks that’s a subject worth joking about, to a course of intense baseball bat therapy.
PS, The Uncle was a carpenter, and as far as I know he didn’t cross dress nor was he transitioning.
Stream of conscious scribbling from Tuesday evening, sorry I didn't rewrite or edit it much. Sue me.
Fag laming me very cutting edge! Make fun of my visible neck is so clever and bad ass knock yourself out
In my worldview there is absolutely nothing remotely funny about child abuse.
I've googled Elton a few times, what ever became of him did he grow up to have a relatively normal happy life, did he turn into a loser criminal in and out of jail, did he become an abuser? I don't have those answers
