in 1937, the Hindenburg burst into flames as it attempted to dock at NAS Lakehurst. 36 people perished in the disaster. Chief Petty Officer Frederick “Bull” Tobin, who had survived the crash of the airship USS Shenandoah in 1925, led sailors in the rescue of crew and passengers from Hindenburg's burning wreck. Often overlooked is the fact that the crash of the airship USS Akron in 1933 took a bigger toll than the Hindenburg, claiming the lives of 73 of the vessel’s 76 US Navy crew members. The Hindenburg is better remembered because of the spectacular footage that captured its final moments.
