2020 vs 2024
The results of the 2024 presidential election are final and Donald Trump won both the electoral college and the popular vote. The American voters have spoken. Here's a comparison of the presidential elections of 2020 and 2024:
After the results of the election were obvious, Kamala Harris called Donald Trump to concede and offer her congratulations. Trump did neither of these things in 2020. In 2024, Democrats are not pushing false narratives of "fraud" or a "stolen" and "rigged" election while spewing wild conspiracy theories, which is exactly what Trump and the Republicans did in 2020; repeatedly and unashamedly pushing these lies.
In 2024, CNN is not blaming faulty Dominion voting machines for the outcome of the election. In 2020, Fox News and Newsmax repeatedly claimed that these voting machines led to Donald Trump's defeat, resulting in Fox News later being forced to pay $787 million in damages to Dominion in a defamation lawsuit. In legal depositions, Fox News personalities testified that they continued to push these lies despite knowing that they were lies.
In 2024, Democrats will not be filing multiple sham lawsuits challenging the validity of this election, unlike Republicans in 2020. In 2024, Kamala Harris will not be pressuring state election officials to "find her" thousands of votes in an attempt to overturn the will of the voters, but this is exactly what Trump did in 2020.
Biden or Harris will not be giving a speech on the Ellipse on the day of the certification of the election results in the U.S. Capitol, telling a crowd of their supporters to "fight like hell or you're not going to have a country anymore", which is exactly what Donald Trump did on January 6th, 2021. More than 170 police officers were assaulted and injured in the ensuing insurrection. On that dark day, and during the 36 hours that followed, 6 people died as a result of the actions of that violent mob. Unlike early 2021, violent mobs of Democrats, including armed militia members, will not be storming the U.S. Capitol chanting "Hang Kamala Harris" for certifying the results of the election.
Unlike Donald Trump in January 2021, both Biden and Harris will be on the stage in front of the U.S. Capitol to witness the swearing-in of Donald Trump; in the process showing respect for our long-standing tradition of the peaceful transfer of power. The outgoing incumbent, Donald Trump, refused to attend the inauguration of Joe Biden.
Unlike Republicans in early 2021, large numbers of Democratic Senators and House members will not be challenging or contesting the validity of the state electors as the election is certified. In the months that follow, large numbers of Democrats at sporting events will not be chanting "Fuck Donald Trump" (remember "Let's Go Brandon"?)
The once great and proud Republican party, the party of Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower and Ronald Reagan, which once had principles, morals and ethics, which once espoused respect for the U.S. Constitution, democracy and the rule of law, has sadly degenerated into a "cult of personality" beholden to one man; who routinely demonstrates contempt for the U.S. Constitution, democracy, and the rule of law, while constantly demonstrating behavior devoid of principles, morals and ethics.
Donald Trump was once called a "fucking moron" by his Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, while several military generals who served in his administration have warned the American people of his fascist tendencies. In his second term, Donald Trump will have few guardrails around him, choosing instead to fill his administration with obsequious sycophants. While Donald Trump is neither a Hitler or a Mussolini, he is much more like Hungarian autocrat Viktor Orban, whom he greatly admires and aspires to emulate. Orban was invited to speak, and warmly welcomed, at the Republican CPAC convention in Dallas, Texas in August 2022. Why do so many Republicans admire autocrats?
Young adults voting for the first time in 2024 have been exposed to the chaos, shameless lies, and political dysfunction of Donald Trump for much of their lives, with this type of political behavior unfortunately becoming "normal" for them. They don't remember anything else. God help us....
So the main difference between the presidential elections of 2020 and 2024? The Democrats gracefully accepted their defeat in 2024, while in 2020 Trump and the Republicans acted like spoiled, petulant children who stubbornly refused to accept the will of the American voters.
Since the Tuesday night election, I've been told several times to "just get over it". I absolutely reject the sanctimonious hypocrisy of those words. "Just get over it"..... just like the Republicans did in 2020? (by Bob Atiyeh)
"Pity the Nation" by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, 2007
"Pity the nation whose people are sheep and whose shepherds mislead them. Pity the nation whose leaders are liars, whose sages are silenced, and whose bigots haunt the airwaves. Pity the nation that raises its voice to praise conquerors and acclaim the bully as hero. Pity the nation that knows no other language but its own and no other culture but its own. Pity the nation, oh pity the people, who allow their rights to erode and their freedoms to be washed away".
