an Immigration & Customs Enforcement deportation officer to facilitate the removal of his estranged wife and her daughter from the country.

Antonio Oswaldo Burgos, 48, made an initial court appearance Friday in federal court before U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul Papak.

Burgos is charged with three counts of bribing a public official. Authorities say Burgos made three separate attempts.

According to court documents, Burgos offered and promised to pay an ICE deportation officer $3,000 on May 31.

Six days later, on June 5, Burgos allegedly repeated his offer.

The following day on June 6, documents say he paid an ICE officer $2,000 and promised to pay an additional $2,000.

While a motive is not clear, according to court records, Burgos' estranged wife filed for divorce on May 21, 10 days prior to his first contact with ICE.

KATU visited his Southeast Portland home Friday evening. Burgos was not home, but his friends said they were shocked to learn of the accusations.

They say Burgos is a legal U.S. citizen and is employed.

They say he met his estranged wife and her daughter in El Salvador several years ago.

According to court documents, the couple married in 2015.

"Irreconcilable differences between the parties have caused the irremediable breakdown of the marriage," dissolution documents read.

The woman's attorney did not respond to KATU's requests for comment.

Burgos does not have a prior criminal history. He was arrested and released pending trial, which is scheduled for August 28.

Well, this dude's an idiot. If his ex and the kid are in the country legally, ICE can't touch 'em. If they're in the country illegally, he needn't have tried to bribe ICE to do their job. Guy's a grade-A maroon.

Or they could just do it the way the other legal immigrants do it. You know where the racism is in immigration law? Letting those from south of the border break that law -- and defending their lawbreaking because of their race.

They're not stupid animals who don't know what they're doing. People need to stop being racist and regard illegal aliens as actual people with free agency who are choosing to break the law.
