Yesterday with my friends and my GOP partner.
Of course, the election came up. 3 lawyers, a public health professional and a business woman. All well educated individuals.
4 of us disappointed with the election, my partner obviously quite happy.
He heard us out and a lot of the concerns and observations that are on this forum, were repeated in real life. One of them worked under Harris as a deputy district attorney in SF years ago when she was DA. She found Harris to be someone with not much conviction about the law, she was more of an administrator than a passionate advocate for the law.
The one thing that seemed to break through, and my partner couldn't help to agree, was the business woman. She grew up in PA, Catholic and in a conservative family; moved to CA in the 70's. She was a Republican and voted for Reagan. She said she bought into the idea of smaller government, less regulation, etc. since she was in business. Then as time passed and she saw the impact of Reagan's policies, she came to regret her support.
She looked at my partner and said that she went to business school and that the only thing that really matters in business is profitability of your business.
She said, if a business were to run the government as a business, you wouldn't care about, for example extending, the life of a person with Type 1 Diabetes. There are lots of costs associated with no profit in this individual. You don't care about about people beyond what profit you can make from them.
Basically, she came to an aha moment in her life, where she realized that the government isn't meant to be profitable. It's inherent responsibilities is to provide for its citizens.
This is why Elon Musk keeps repeating that the cuts to government he's going to make, but certainly not to his business interests I'm sure, will be painful. Of course, he doesn't care about hurting people. They're just costs and no profit to be made.
What the right wing fails to understand is that we are all "suckers and losers" to the billionaire class. Chumps.
What you reap, you shall sow.
