People weren't stealing baby formula because they couldn't afford to feed their children. They were stealing it to sell it. Same as white-strips for teeth and razor blades for shaving. Same as stealing steaks and bags of frozen shrimp. Same as stealing cartons of cigarettes when they were displayed on the sales floor before they put them behind the counter.

For some, I suppose but most of them don't look like druggies. You see an odd person and that kind of puts them on your radar. These shoplifters want to be inconspicuous and not draw attention to themselves. It used to be quite a racket. There were local shoplifters, sure but people would come up from Maryland into Pennsylvania and took their chance at any store that was close to the highway.

You know for a fact no poor parents ever steal baby formula to feed their own baby? When my Son was a baby, his Mom's old friend was single and she told us she'd steal essentials like formula now and then, because she was dirt poor at the time.


eta, I’m not condoning theft, just saying not everyone who does shoplift is a professional and often has extenuating circumstances.

Yeah, it happens but not to the extent that you might be portraying. You don't see poor people stealing milk, eggs and peanut butter and whatever else because they get that stuff for free with food stamps. What I see is people having kids that they can't afford to take care of so they can get free 'gives' while the children are neglected or being raised by their grandparents.
