His first lesson to me was whittling with a jack knife I got for Christmas at age 7. Standard lesson....carve away, etc... but he'd watch me for a few minutes then walk away content that I was okay. It wasn't a lock back... lol... Two trips for stitches after, I was aggro at him for not sitting there with me and offering constant supervision. I'm a helicopter parent in that way now. Daughter knows her shit too...but I don't walk away when she's near fire or blades.
