I would think that if someone is short their rent, and struggling to pay it like that....the best option is to get evicted. They CAN(at least here) go after you to pay the rest of the lease but depending on the reason why you couldnt pay the rent, a court may let you off the hook. I'm pretty sure it will go on your credit. But to me, that's better than throwing your limited income away on something you cannot afford where every month you are struggling and stressing on how you are gonna pay. If it were me I would look for another living situation asap, let myself get evicted and keep the money for that month. But I have no problem with "extreme" solutions like camping as a living situation. I have a friend from childhood who made okay money as a baker....and he also worked construction a few days a week. He didnt want to rent so he legit lived in a tent for two years and bought a small house with cash. I dont know why more people dont do that. Or do the van conversation thing. It's not hard to do. It really isnt. Just go alternative living for a while and stash your money. It's a fuck ton better than trying to live outside your means and needing help from other people for rent every month. Things do happen that can make someone short for one month... so that's why I asked why they needed help. The reason why should dictate what kind of help is best for them. If it was going to be a monthly struggle and wasnt just some emergency event that just made them short for that month.....helping them find another alternative is better than just paying for that month only to have them struggle again. You can help financially with another situation. That they can afford. Or to help save money. People snub shelters or tents or crashing in vans as "homelessness" or seeing it as some horror story but there absolutely is nothing wrong with it and saving money is awesome. I would find that worlds better than being stressed every month facing the same eviction issue with no money. What I would never do is allow anyone to move in with me. I've done that once before....never ever again. It was a total shit show.
