Larry is right though. There is nothing worse than a landmine that is left behind in a farmer's field or some woods. The farmer, his kids, his livestock, all are vulnerable to these demonic things. Kids playing in the fields and woods are the usual victims. The Balkans are still a very sore spot with kids finding mines the hard way. There are volunteer groups dedicated to clearing mines in former war zones like that. The UN has a support program that works hard to help these groups. When we lay down a mine field, careful maps are made showing exactly where they are. Otherwise we could fall victim to them ourselves. Every GI is instructed on how to search for mines and to mark the position. There are specialized units that then come and either explode them or disarm them. A tough job requiring nerves of steel. Russians don't bother with that. When it comes to securing a border with mines there is a procedure for that too. Every single mine is GPS located, plus on a map, with grids showing every location. The area is well marked, fenced off with barbed wire, warning signs in several languages, and still patrolled by security. No one wants kids or animals wandering into a mine field. But no one in their right mind is going to test a mine field by just strolling through. There is one procedure for clearing a path through mines that only the most inhumane of creatures would use. That is taking prisoners, or your own troops, and forcing them to walk through a mine field at gun point. Every safe step is marked, and when one explodes, that creates another safe area. Reports are that Russia is using the North Korean soldiers it got to do just that. Captured North Koreans say that if they get wounded, the Russians execute them rather than treat them. This is the part of a 'police state - dictatorship' that the morons don't get. Until it bites them in the ass.
