Donald Trump’s latest United Nations speech was a spectacle from the beginning, starting with the escalator grinding to a halt the moment he stepped on it. By the time he reached the podium, another glitch hit as his teleprompter froze, forcing him into a 45 minute ramble when he was supposed to speak for only 15. He leaned heavily on his trademark bravado, telling leaders, “I’m really good at this stuff, I’ve always been good at it, and everybody knows it,” while attempting to ad lib a message that only drew laughter and groans in the room.
Rather than speaking to global challenges, Trump lashed out at the very leaders he was meant to engage. “Your countries are going to hell and I am the only one who can tell you the truth about it,” he barked, to an audience left stunned. On climate change, he doubled down on denial, saying, “Global warming is a hoax. It has always been a hoax. They want to take away your jobs and your freedoms with fake science and I will never let that happen.” It was yet another moment where he pushed conspiracy over cooperation, leaving allies shaking their heads.
Trump could not resist bragging about his reputation, commenting on merchandise inspired by his supporters: “They actually said during the campaign, they had a hat. The best-selling hat: ‘Trump was right about everything.’ And I don’t say that in a braggadocious way, but it’s true. I’ve been right about everything.” He closed with his trademark bravado, boasting, “My poll numbers are higher than ever. The fake news does not report it, but everybody sees it, everybody knows it,” cementing an impression of a leader more preoccupied with self promotion than global diplomacy.
