My dad did that sling thing for one of his dogs. What a freaking hassle. He used to struggle with it and the dog was miserable.

It didn't live very long. He should have put it out of it's misery and you @Jack should consider the difficult but empathetic decision to do the same.

Mines a tibbie and weighs about 9 lbs. She's a teacup of a dog. Still a puppy as well.

Yeah would have been difficult to look after, when a big dog legs or hips are fucked its a steep slope for them, especially if your pops was old at the time.

I mean if a small dog breed like Jack's gets a similar injury it would be a lot easier to look after than a large dog.
