My hand surgery

2 days ago I had surgery to remove thickened growth on the tendon in my right hand which is due to a genetic abnormality known as Dupuytren's contracture which is a progressive hand condition where thickened fibrous tissue in the palm causes fingers, most commonly the ring and little fingers, to bend toward the palm, limiting hand function.

It's genetic, my dad had it. He waited until his fingers started to contract like a bird claw and he had more complicated surgery. Waiting too long also carries the risk of permanent loss of full finger mobility.

I had two small lumps in my hand, but no pain or reduced hand function. As I knew what was coming I opted for the knife now rather than more knives later. It was much more involved than I expected, two Greek surgeons opened my hand and pulled crap out of it for over an hour. Although numb after the painful needles to inject anesthetic, I could feel EVERYTHING. They were deep into my hand, pulling on muscles and tendons, twisting, cutting, slicing.

They had a tourniquet on my upper arm and one surgeon kept heavy pressure on my wrist, pushing it so hard into the table that it felt like it was being slowly severed. My wife was by my side she said my whole arm turned purple. When they released the tourniquet and the pleasure the heat just rushed through my arm as the blood filled the vessels.

Here's a picture from day 3.
