Yeah, I sometimes watch Jeremy McCord, at least I think that's his name. He's one of these influencers who spent like 8.5 years in prison, and he explains stuff like this. He had a video where he explains in detail why lifers especially always have their cell mate sit when they pee. Like you stated, splash is going to happen, and I guess the lifers see it as someone disrespecting their "home" because that's it for them, this IS the best it's going to get. And I think it just isn't the lifers, alot of other convicts do it too with shorter sentences.

I couldn't or wouldn't scroll through all his videos to find the one about this subject, but I did find a video that kinda touches on it. No pun intended.
