It's possible.... I can drive machinery quicker, more efficiently, and safer than 5-10 peoples worth in the 20 something to 30 something age bracket.

Writing computer software is not like manual or physical labour.

A good analogy would be given the task of proving the Pythagorean Theorem. You could ask a thousand people to do it, and they might never get it done. It is beyond their capabilities.

But one person can prove it in an hour.

Two quick examples of my experiences:

In college, we were given a specific program to write with a deadline of midnight. At 3pm or so when our classes were over, the entire class of about 30 students filled a computer lab to get it done. I went to do other stuff. At 11:00 pm or so I went to the lab to get started. Everyone was still working, trying to solve one problem or another. I coded the entire program by about 11:30 pm and spent the next 30 minutes helping a bunch of friends get theirs done.

In my corporate job I gave an intermediate programmer the task of writing a module. He struggled with it for 3 or 4 days. The deadline was approaching so I told him I would write it. It took me less than an hour.

Now if you are just talking about writing very simple modules, then sure, I will not be 10x faster than an average programmer because that is just typing and not solving any difficult problems. But with more challenging problems, I can solve them 10, 20, 20, 40 times faster than the average programmer. Many problems an average programmer will never be able to solve in their entire lifetime.

Why is navigating a dozer, excavator, or bobcat through almost virgin territory full of ruts, mudslides, washouts, log jams, poisonous flora and fauna not the same as what you did?

How is feeling the slight shift in ground on a dirt mountain shoulder and promptly getting out then tying off the winches quickly as you watch your machinery collapse down the mountainside and retrieving it over the course of an hour because there's nobody within UHF or cell phone range to know you died?

But I am not going to pretend that it is as intellectually challenging as developing a complex algorithm to solve a difficult problem.

What about a bank of a river you're trying to cross and it's quicksand so you're 90 degrees suspended with only your bucket to stop you from completing flipping and drowning? Could you get out of the cab, swim to safety, dodge brown snakes along the edge, and rig up a broken winch on an old Landcruiser to right it along with the machine's remote controlled winch?

How about dozing a road in sand as a fire breaks containment and the firefighters are going to die if you don't keep compacting it for each transit they make...
