I absolutely agree that any forum needs staff willing to do some work and keep/lead an unruly bunch on the straight and narrow. It's a difficult task when you have people willing to burn the place down simply to be "right", even when they are clearly wrong. And a forum owner has to have the strength to make the best decisions for the health of the forum and those that occupy it.
I don't know that her forum doesn't have that. Everyone learns along the way. And we learn more from our failures than our successes. Time can only tell how any of these forums will do.
I say that those "hatreds" that exist among all these common forums is what is actually killing them. These unspoken loyalty pledges, these "allegiances" and grudges is what is actually turning people off and slowly whittling away at the "community". It's really too bad we all see it and are unable to do anything about it.
And "doing" something about it mostly involves letting go/forgiving and moving along to get along in a more friendly manner, even as we disagree. It's what most people, I believe, really want out of the online forums.

Possibly worthy wordsmiths may have fresh arrows to let fly but, when their equally worthy targets are busily daisy-chaining their asses at the bottom of a back alley dumpster, the arrows stay in the quiver. Membership goes stale--or, to stay with the image, begins to rot.
The one thing missing from the OP's Vocapoof is any sense that he understands--really understands--who his intended audience is. Is he playing only to those who miss his very public chronicling of a failed tryst with a gal who bought him a bus ticket and a decaf latte? Or is he playing to a wider audience who may or may not have been there when the Switch was dangled over the toilet bowl, who may not even care about that shit, and who are left wondering how such a mundane event as the aborted pairing of two damaged souls could possibly have become the battle hill Poofer chooses to rest his laurels on?
One thing ol' Martino is spot on about, though, when it comes to the popularity (or lack thereof) of online "discussion forums," is this: partisan politics kills these boards quicker than hurricane Ian can send a "50-60 G" Audi into an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
If a forum is all about highlighting a more or less wordy game of crafty (and hopefully tasty and well seasoned) one-upmanship, then you have to expect that bloated egos will be part of the recipe. In this regard, Poofer is quite an ordinary exemplar. He shouldn't be chided for just following the recipe. Some day, a true creative will show up to teach him (and the other exhausted flamers busily polishing their tin stars to a deep, burnished bronze) how to lead rather than merely follow.
That'll be an exciting day indeed. I can't wait.

Well said, Blurt well said. I hope I didn't come off as PollyAnna-ish, it wasn't my intent. I agree with your sentiments about closing ourselves off to others because of our politics. It may be the least important yardstick we use to make or rebuff connections with others.
