But in 1987, Donald F. Dufek, then the group vice president for The Kroger Co.,

I've never used it. Would rather interact with the cashier anyway.
I don't use them, either. I don't want people to lose their jobs. They are trying to push them here. A lot of young people use them, but most people here will stand for a long time in the cashier's line rather than use the machines.

I don't want people to lose their jobs.

That is archaic thinking.

There are many situations where technology can be utilized to replace human workers that will result in greater efficiencies and will be overall beneficial.

Is this one of those situations? That is debatable.

But the opinion that "It is bad for people to lose their jobs." is (and probably always has been) flawed. It is thought and said without an understanding of The Big Picture.

When I lived in the city and only had if there were long lines or I only had a couple items I’d use them,?but I would feel a tinge of guilt later

I use them every time they offer them. The type of people who work in supermarkets in my country are not people you want to interact with or trust not to fuck something up.

I avoid them , I'd rather give someone a job and use the cashier it's getting harder now that you can pay cash at self check out
Two people always monitor the self checkouts in the store i shopped in so that's 2 extra employees in addition to all the cashiers

It's all I ever use but I make small purchases because I work there and I DEFINITELY do not want ANY more social interaction.

I can't think of anything worse than standing face to face with a complete stranger and feeling obliged to talk with them. Maybe thats why people have kids, so they don't have to talk to the check out operator.

The problem is that people don't want to work and they are constantly calling off.

My store has a consistent morning crew on the front end, mostly women but a couple men. They're all older and around retirement age. Most of them are dumb as hell but they show up for work everyday. The problem is in the afternoon and evening. A lot of younger help ... teenagers or college kids ... maybe some of them do okay.

The last time I went through a checkout the teenage girl had a massive tantrum at me and chucked all my shit into the trolly in a pile. The other staff did nothing. Never again.
