For the first time in United States history, a transgender person has been elected state senator. 30-year-old Sarah McBride conquered a seat in the US state of Delaware. This makes her the highest position in the country that is openly a trans person. "I hope that tonight an LGBTQ child sees that our democracy is big enough for them too," says a proud McBride on Twitter.
Americans today not only elected a president, but numerous other representatives of the people as well. McBride (30) has received so many votes that she is allowed to join the Senate of the state of Delaware, on the US east coast. She is no stranger to American politics, especially in Democratic circles. For example, she walked onstage in the White House when Barack Obama was president.
McBride's winning came as no surprise. She won in a district known as a Democratic stronghold. In 2016, then-presidential candidate Hillary Clinton captured nearly 70 percent of the vote in Delaware.
The campaign of Steve Washington, McBride's Republican rival, never got off the ground. "With Delaware still facing the Covid crisis, it is time to get to work and invest in policies that will make a difference to working families," McBride tweeted.
