I want to give you a quick story on how Donald Trump ruined America's 250th Independence Celebration. First, I'm going to take you back to 1966.
In that year, President Johnson signed a bipartisan joint resolution of Congress to establish a nonprofit bicentennial commission. Its purpose was to organize national events for the 1976 celebration. Johnson's successors, Nixon and Ford, left the commission alone to do its work, and the result was a yearlong 200th-birthday celebration that went off without a hitch. It was a beautiful time. I was eight years old; I didn't know what the word bicentennial meant. I remember hearing it a lot and seeing all the red, white, and blue covering my city of Washington, D.C.
Fast forward to 2016: Barack Obama, in the spirit of LBJ, signed a resolution establishing America 250. It, too, was a nonpartisan nonprofit commission assembled for the country's semiquincentennial celebration in 2026. It was to be done in the same fashion as it was for 1976.
Then, in January 2025, America 250 was gutted in favor of a newly created for-profit entity called Freedom 250. They took $125 million from American 250 funding and diverted it to Freedom 250. Also added to the new for-profit Freedom 250 were instructions that the president's name and picture be included in all public materials related to the Freedom 250 celebration. The celebration became more about him than about the country. Then, Freedom 250 established licensing and branding agreements, along with merchandise sales for profit, in collaboration with organizations such as the UFC. But, funds generated from these deals were directed at an undisclosed bank account rather than the US Treasury. He and his family, along with his buddies, as always, lined their pockets for profit at the expense of the country's celebration. It's sad to have him as president during this milestone in our country's history.
If they had kept it America 250, kept it nonpartisan, kept it nonprofit, and kept it from becoming political, it would've drawn excitement from all over. None of those musical artists would have canceled. That State Fair on the Mall wouldn't look like a mausoleum. It would've been like 1976 all over again, even better. Google some of the Bicentennial pictures; it was a grand celebration. But instead, Trump made our 250th Birthday more about him than America itself. It would've been a great celebration for our nation, but he fcked it up as he does with everything he touches.
I won't be around for the 300th celebration.
I hope your Children’s children’s children and their kids are around to celebrate and not get cheated as we have.
