It's a big deal. Everyone comes out to watch the lights go on on the cobblestone/tile walk street that's about three or four blocks long and is lined with very old and lovely buildings. The lights are different every year. There is fado on the old church steps, and everyone dances in the praca or drinks wine at all the sidewalk cafes.

Best Christmas lights show I've ever seen was in India. We went to the Christmas Eve Holy Mass at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in New Delhi. There were thousands of people about, most lighting candles outside, but still hundreds of people packed inside. It was a strange experience. I'm old enough to remember masses being celebrated in Latin in the Quebec of my youth but hearing mass being celebrated in Hindi is a trip.
I spent a lot of time outside lighting candles, both before and after mass.
