In 1983, Gossett became the first Black winner of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar after he stunned audiences with his showstopping portrayal of a severe Marine drill instructor in "An Officer and a Gentleman," alongside actor Richard Gere.

Speaking on the Oscat award-winning film, Gossett noted that he was not the first choice for the role.

"They had hired another actor who was White, but when director Taylor Hackford found out that 75% of the Marine DIs were Black, they paid him off and hired me," Gosset said, per People. "I went down to San Diego Marine Corps to learn for six weeks. When I showed up on set, I was a marine."

Before his Oscar, the iconic actor had won an Emmy for his work in the groundbreaking 1977 TV miniseries "Roots."

And of course, he made it really big as an Actor.

So, gotta give him his due. He could succeed in the Black Man or White Man's world.

Perhaps the only other Black man who might compare with that all around stature is singer Paul Roebson - although his achievements were probably more accomplished as he graduated as a lawyer from Columbia U & is still considered one of the Greatest Football players of his time perhaps all time. Also did it without the aid of steroids. He was naturally big strong and athletic.

Senile @Joe was pointing out that Lou Gossett Jr. was talented in many areas: As an actor, as an athlete, and as a songwriter.

Winning two awards for acting does not point to being talented in anything more than acting.

But he was nowhere near as all around accomplished

Gossett & Roebson were good at everything they did. Academically. Musically. Theatrically. Those kind of people come along only once in a generation or 2.

I think they call those kinda people Renaissance Men.

Regardless of their race they were at the top of their game.

It is "Robeson".

The person you found when you Googled "well-rounded and accomplished black man" is named "Paul Robeson".

I gave you the benefit of doubt before when it might have just been a typo, but now......

You have been exposed, Senile @Joe.
