"A Tennessee Democrat on Thursday called for Memphis to secede from the state after Republican Gov. Bill Lee signed a new congressional map that splits Tennessee's only majority-Black district into three parts.
The map, approved by the Republican-led Legislature, puts the state's only Democrat-held U.S. House seat at risk and could pave the way for an all-Republican congressional delegation in November.
The redistricting is the first enacted since the U.S. Supreme Court last week limited a key protection in the Voting Rights Act.
State Rep. Antonio Parkinson, D-Memphis, said in a House floor speech and later in an that the city is losing representation despite serving as a key driver of Tennessee's economy.
"Let Memphis secede from the state of Tennessee. And I'm dead serious. Let my people go," Parkinson said."
