Lately I’ve been thinking about taking a mixology course and look for a second job tending bar.

I‘m hoping to find something that pays off the books. Anyone have experience in this area and/or advice?

You don't need to go to bartenders school.

Pray your tips are cash now because credit tips you won't get until the next day with the taxes already taken out of them.

Either club or franchise restaurants. No holes in the wall or mom and pop stores.

Be ready to leave once the peak hits if you choose a club. The money isn't going to last once the new hip club opens.

It’s really just a second job so I don’t want to pay taxes period.
why no hole in the wall or mom & pop? I’m not expecting to get a bunch of $$ just a second income.
i practically grew up in dive bars so I’m kinda used to the clientele.

Well, your going to pay taxes on your credit tips. There's no way around it. There's no loop hole nor is anybody gonna pay you your credit tips under the table without the entire store being audited.

Dive bars are for suckers. Your going to deal with the same pieces of shit every weekend who think they're entitled over you.

YOU are there to make money. Not babysit drunks. Any shift your doing sidework and having to deal with coworkers and guests. Make as much money as you can because your putting up with the same shit.

Dive bar Friday night- 75 to 100 bucks
Franchise restaurant- 150 to 300 bucks
Club- 500 to 1k or a set tipshare which will be minimum 500

Granted, the interaction is alot more frequent at a club and you gotta always be moving, but you will bank.

And do not go to some mixology school. No bar is going to take that seriously because they are going to train you the way they want you to be.

Bartendering is a fucking hustle. Ain't too many really good bartenders any more but if you put in the work you can call your shots and work at the best places.

My advice to you? Work in one of those strip mall casinos that serve beer.

All pay outs are in cash, they have to pay for their drinks with cash, and you'd make at least minimum wage and not hospitality wage.

I went to mixology school because I fell into managing a burlesque club about 10 years ago. The owner was frustrated and I was honest… so he offered me a job. I revamped their entire business so the owners could focus on the show and perfected their dinner service in the process. My family owns restaurants and that’s where I learned the business and started working way back when… having an eye for detail was also valuable in this venture.

The nice part about mixology school (outside of the then $600+ fee) is you learn the speed rail and how to free pour. I made recipe cards to study with and I still have them in a little case in my kitchen. I took the “flare” class and could pour 20+ drinks in 2 minutes or whatever crazy requirement that got me my cert.

But I only used this cert to create the club’s signature drink menu ~ which consisted mostly of decadent dessert martinis. I’ve never worked in the industry outside of this club either… and King Martini has a lot of experience here. I did bartend when the club was slammed… and I made good tips being cute and wearing a corset.

The best tips I got were from drunk dudes shoving hundreds into my cleavage tbh.

My experience with bartendering school grads pretty much is they know what they were taught but don't know how to work a bar.

Pouring drinks is easy. Getting ppl to give you their money, isn't. You gotta be charismatic, work your way into conversations without being a third wheel, shit like that.

But....bartending isn't really second job material. One you get that first huge bank night your going to be hooked. Hell....I was hooked the first time I got a 20 dollar tip. Then my first 200 dollar night...then my first 500 dollar night....then my first bottle service tip share....

I couldn't help, but I am a pretty resourceful person, so I tried to help anyway I could.
