Participate, or just watch?

I am leaving is about 30 minutes to referee two hockey games.

I have seen and heard so many people typing and talking about the Olympics lately.

Cheering for their country's athletes.

Watching other people play.

I have always preferred to participate in sports.

Today I am officiating.

Tomorrow I am meeting with other executive members to plan the upcoming baseball season.

I play pickle ball just about every week.

I play hockey in the cold months.

I play baseball in the warm months.

I officiate both hockey and baseball.

Who else here participates in sports? What sports and how?

If you do not participate in sports, why not?!?!?

I haven't participated much in sports in the past decade Lex @The Prowler.

A lot of the reasons are time and money.

It takes time and money to participate in many sports.

People spend time trying to make a living so its sometimes difficult to find the time to participate in these activities.

But as I approach full retirement, I should have more time for those sort of activities.

I have this 'bucket list' of sports activities I'd like to accomplish within the next 5 years Prowler

1. Take up Tennis again, learn how to make a proper serve. In particular learn the topspin serve. Or the
'American Twist Serve' which seems almost impossible .
2. Take up Golf gain, learn how to hit with the clubs this time. I had previously learned how to hit irons, but not the clubs yet.
3. See if I can successfully pitch a baseball overhand across home plate from a regulation size pitching mound.
4. Learn how to use the slapshot in ice hockey.
5. Learn to ski moguls on a hill.

While I'm not terribly athletic, I just would like to be able to do these things just to say I did them and to get a sense of accomplishment. I know they are minor and insignficant to others. It's akin to be able to play a few songs/chords on the guitar or riffs on a piano. Just for fun, eh.

Now...I realize there's miles of difference between someone who's merely competent at an athletic task and another who's a professional or semi-pro or even a highly qualified amateur. But I'd be satisfied with merely being competent, able to execute these basic athletic fucntions.

Most people can achieve a level of athletic competency at something. Take a few lessons, whack enough tennis balls or golf balls and eventually something clcks.

You are about 80 years old, right?

You talk about being a teenager in the mid 60's

I put topspin on my second serve in tennis.

2. Take up Golf gain, learn how to hit with the clubs this time. I had previously learned how to hit irons, but not the clubs yet.

They are all called "clubs", Senile @Joe. You are probably referring to the "woods" or the "metal woods".

How do you not know this already?!?!?

3. See if I can successfully pitch a baseball overhand across home plate from a regulation size pitching mound.

I do that all summer long, Senile @Joe. I would pitch you up and in.

4. Learn how to use the slapshot in ice hockey.

How to "use" a slapshot? Do you mean how to "take" a slapshot?

I bet I could hit you in the face with a slapshot from 75 feet away.

Can you skate, Senile @Joe?

5. Learn to ski moguls on a hill.

You will break every bone in your body.

Go for it!!!

What is wrong with you that you have not already done these things?

Well y'know there are certain sports I won't do anymore Lex @The Prowler

Such as

1. Curling - I tried it many years ago. Those rocks are rather heavy. My brother in law curled over the years, and then one night tore some muscles when he was the skip pushing one of the rocks and needed major surgery. And they're not really come back, healing eh. It took months of rehab and of course, he'll never be 100% again. I was never really fond of curling anyway.

2. Heavy duty Cycling - Knew this family friend who was a triathathlete. Big Strong high skillled. He used to cycle cross country on these long trips/excursions. But one day his bike cartwheeled after his front tire hit something. and the bike flipped and he dislocated his shoulder. Saw him recently and his arm is practically limp now basically has no function anymore. He kinda walks like a hunchback because of that injury now. I've never really been that interested in cycling either, tho I've done it.

So these 'high impact' or 'heavy' sports don't interest me anymore. Just stuff that's doable and relatively safe, eh.
