Queensland police have confirmed officers used force while detaining an Indigenous man who became unconscious and died soon afterwards.
The 27-year-old man could not be revived after what has been described as a “violent struggle” in the regional city of Toowoomba on Thursday.
An investigation is under way into the incident, which saw two officers involved taken to hospital. They have since been released and are on leave.
“While use of force was used during the incident, it can be confirmed no Taser or firearm was used,” the police service said in a statement on Friday.
“A postmortem examination is due to occur today which will provide investigators with further information.”
