while those who are above average rate themselves as average or below?
Not me.
When I was in grade 10, I was causing lots of trouble. I had been a top student all my life to that point, but now I was goofing off way too much. I met with the head counselor at my school and he decided to have a bunch of tests done on me including a bunch of tests at the hospital and, also, I was given an IQ test.
I had an appointment with him with my parents. He said something like "We got the medical tests back and everything is good. We also got the IQ test results and this is not what I expected. You are at the genius level."
My parents and I both looked at him thinking "Okay, what is it that you did not expect?" My parents and I all knew I was highly intelligent, but apparently the counselor was not in the loop.
Then there was a lot of talk about having me transfer to a different school and being put into a program for gifted students. I said "No, thank you." and spent the rest of my time in high school creating chaos and getting good marks (for the most part).
Looking back, I do have a few regrets about high school. One is that I did not join the debate team. I had a locker outside of the debate team coach's classroom - he was an English teacher "Mr. Smith". A black guy with an accent (from somewhere in the Caribbean I think). I guess he heard me argue with my friends at times and thought I presented solid logic with sound reasoning. He asked me and tried to convince me to come out for the debate team a bunch of times, but I always laughed and said "No."
Also, I did not join the "Senior Math League". I was always one of the top students in Math, but I was more interested in athletics. I did enter two math contests - one I basically had to enter in order to get into the university I attended, and one was the Senior Math Contest that I think just about every 5th year student wrote. I got an award for each contest at the big academic award ceremony for the entire school board. I think I was one of the top 3 in the Senior Math Contest and one of the top 6 in the other contest. They did not tell us our place, they just said "Top 3" and "Top 6" in all of the schools in the school board (probably about 15 high schools). Those were the only two math contests for which they gave awards, and the only two I ever wrote.
So, looking back, I probably would have enjoyed dominating in the "Senior Math League".
Anyways, I am way above average intelligence and I know it.
