Steam Machines also features an integrated 2.4 GHz Steam Controller wireless adapter, Wi-Fi 6E wireless, Bluetooth 5.3, HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.4 ports that support HDR, FreeSync, and CEC, Gigabit Ethernet, two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, USB-A 2.0 High speed ports, and USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 port.

Two Steam Machine models are offered, one with 512GB NVMe SSD storage and the other one with 2TB NVMe SSD storage. Both models include a high-speed microSD card slot and 17 individually addressable RGB LEDs for system status and customizability. More details about Steam Machines

SteamOS, btw, is based on Arch, and with the KDE desktop, it offers a lighter, slicker, more secure, and more privacy-respecting alternative to Windows.

Every year has been touted as, "the year of the Linux desktop", but that hype just got a lot more heft behind it with this announcement.

  1. Bazzite/Nobara: These are community-driven Linux distributions (based on Fedora) that package SteamOS components (like Game Mode) with optimized Nvidia drivers and settings, offering a near-native experience.
I wanna give that one a try

CachyOS is probably the closest you can get to SteamOS for PC right now. It's based on Arch (like SteamOS) while Bazzite and Nobara are based on Fedora Silverblue or Kenoite, respectively.

Why did Steam wait so long? Trying to connect to their library on my Meta Quest blows. Not that they seem to have access to anything I don't already have access to.

I haven't tested it first-hand, but I don't see why you couldn't install most Linux distributions to an external drive. Some 'portable' distros, such as Tails, are even specifically made to be run that way.

It would defeat the object by wiping all the films and TV shows i have on it, unless I got a second external drive.

Cheers anyway.

Is it worth it to install windows 11 @The Question ?

I gotta 100 mb partition on my hard drive.

Thought I'd like to try it out.

I wonder if @MANCID RILKO could weigh in. i reckon he's tried it out already.

If not that then a version referred to as 'Windows Lite'? I read that version has had some positive reviews.

Chaos Control ☠️
Microsoft provides law enforcement with BitLocker encryption keys for Windows 11 devices when stored in the cloud (OneDrive), representing a functional backdoor via legal compliance. In early 2025, Microsoft handed over these keys to the FBI to unlock laptops during a fraud investigation, confirming a known legal pathway to access user data.
Key details regarding Windows 11 and government access:
BitLocker Key Access: If you enable BitLocker and choose to backup the recovery key to your Microsoft Account (standard practice), Microsoft can produce this key in response to a valid legal order.
TPM and Cloud Telemetry: Windows 11 requires a TPM (Trusted Platform Module). The Platform Crypto Provider (PCP) can use Microsoft's Azure Attestation service to verify system integrity remotely.
Recall Feature: Features like Windows Recall take frequent snapshots of user activity, creating a massive repository of local data that could be accessible with the right, or a compromised, account.
Mitigation: To limit this, users can disable automatic BitLocker backups to the cloud, use local accounts, and clear the TPM module. While no public proof exists of an "intentional back door" allowing secret, warrantless access for the government, Microsoft has confirmed it complies with legal requests by providing stored encryption keys.
