You're overthinking something that really isn't so complicated.

The duopoly has spent generations conditioning 'Muricans to believe that a strict two-party system is the bee's knees and any deviation from the manufactured red/blue dichotomy is unthinkable, even if both candidates are trash. Now whenever one party or the other elevates a candidate that most voters find utterly repugnant the only option is the other team's candidate whether or not that candidate is suited to the role.

Modern 'Murican elections are like bizarro popularity contests except instead of the most liked the winner is determined by which is hated the least.
