President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, during a press conference, has stated that he is willing to leave his position in exchange for peace in Ukraine.
During the press conference, Zelenskyy was asked whether he was ready to step down as president. In response, he stated that he was willing to leave his post if it meant securing peace for Ukraine.
"If peace for Ukraine requires it, and if you need me to leave my post – I am ready. The second question is, can I exchange it for NATO membership? If such conditions exist, let's do it right away so we don't waste time discussing it," Zelenskyy told the journalist.
According to him, he is currently focused on Ukraine's security today, not 20 years from now, and he has no intention of remaining in power for decades.
"I believe NATO is the cheapest option, and that's the truth. In any case, regardless of who supports it or not, this topic is on the table. And it will also be part of security guarantees and negotiations. I don't know how these negotiations will end, but this issue will certainly be discussed," he said.
Zelenskyy emphasized that this topic would be discussed with Ukraine's partners.
"It is important for all of us to understand – this is not a negotiation table where Ukraine is invited. This is our table because of the war happening in our country. We are the ones inviting European leaders because the war is being fought on our land. We are part of this continent," he stressed.
During his election campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly promised to end the war in Ukraine. However, after taking office, he began making pro-Russian statements and blaming the Ukrainian leadership. He even called Zelenskyy a "dictator without elections" and claimed that the Ukrainian president had done nothing to end the war.
On February 21, Trump acknowledged Russia's guilt in starting the war but also blamed Zelenskyy and Biden. He claimed that Putin wants peace, but at the same time, he could take over all of Ukraine. Trump also criticized Europe, saying it had not made sufficient efforts to stop the war.
Recently, a conflict erupted between Trump and Zelenskyy. The US president claimed Zelenskyy's approval rating among Ukrainians was allegedly 4%.
In response, Zelenskyy dismissed this claim, saying that it was Russian propaganda and urged Trump not to spread Moscow's disinformation.
