It's been a team effort.
Just recently...
Bush gave us the laughably named "Patriot Act".
Obama expanded on it, including suspending habeas corpus.
Trump continued pushing the envelope on an already bloated executive authority.
Biden tried to set up a 'ministry of truth' to monitor and police online speech.
Now Trump is once again using the powers he inherited to wipe his ass with the bill of rights.
The persecution of Julian Assange, as an example, spanned administrations; the crackdown on whistleblowers and journalists has only accelerated no matter which party is in power.
If wall street or Big Business needs to be bailed out the treasury is opened with hardly a question but if people are struggling they're out of fucking luck and thanks to our predatory for-profit health "care" system it's almost inevitable that people are going to struggle sooner or later. Neither of the duopoly parties have any interest in addressing this and other fundamental flaws in the status quo.
The democrats and republicans are two wings on the same vulture.

What you're describing is corporatism. Healthcare prices are in orbit because the health insurance racket means that no matter how insane the price they demand, they'll get it -- so there's no incentive for them to keep prices sane. Same with college tuitions thanks to the student loan racket. They get whatever absurd figure they ask for thanks to the fact that taxpayers are footing the bill. Lay that at the feet of government at various levels.
Get guaranteed payouts out of the picture and watch how fast healthcare and tuition come down (IF all their screaming doesn't reverse such a move, of course. See: Anti-DOGE screech fests. Bureaucrats and their corporate pals are getting fat off the tax cattle, and god help anybody who tries to put a stop to it.)
