Avarice is always the underlying factor in all these conflicts.

Fuck high-tech. Think of all the years we thought it was the "alpha" type douchebags that were the biggest threat to peace and tranquility.

It turns out the goofus incels in high tech have been the actual problem in recent decades.

They scare me. They are soulless.

This story of lithium in Portugal is profoundly sad.

Now green energy is going to cause degradation to the land and probably take people's way of life away.

The solutions that people come up with are bad too, at least in some regions. This is what the whole annexing Greenland is about, minerals.

Barroso’s agroecological system has also been recognized for its unique social systems based on communitarianism and mutual support. In addition to the collective management of common lands, sowing and harvesting are carried out jointly by entire households and neighbors.

“Everyone helps each other,” says Fátima Dias as she picks potatoes with her extended family on a sweltering August morning in Covas do Barroso. “We distribute the potatoes among everyone. It should last us until next year,” she adds while peeking at the day’s harvest.

Parts of the Barroso do not have money at all. They are completely self-sustaining and cooperative in their farming practices. There is also a distinct language in the region -- Mirandese, not Spanish or Portuguese. Destroying this community would be an international crime, imo.

I am seriously trying to figure out if there is anything at all I can do to help the region. I don't know what, but if I can think of anything worth while, I would be willing to devote the last part of my life to this cause.

Work with people that want to protect it as a Portuguese heritage region?

Is that a thing there?

I'm sure it is. I know it is locally, but there may be larger national organizations. I need to find some Portuguese people who are involved in this. Most of them would be in Lisbon or Porto, but maybe there are some here in the center of the country.

It might prove helpful if people from all parts of Portugal want to protect that region.

I am on a listserve of a group of American immigrants in PT whose stated mission is to make noise here in Europe re the Trump admin's crimes, AND to stand up for progressive politics in Portugal. I made a suggestion in the listserve that we look to ourselves and our own contributions, because of how we negatively affect the economy for working Portuguese by doing things like flipping houses (favorite income generator for many Americans and English here), and as a result of the battered economy, the beloved socialist government in PT is turning to the right. I was basically told I was not in the right group for that and to take a hike. No one ever wants ethics to get in the way of their personal greed. It pisses me off.

This is the problem that exists among the progressive left, NIMBYism. I've seen it all my adult life. And it is a contributing factor for Trumpism...the working classes left behind by the educated and comfortable "left".

And then Portuguese families, who tend to keep all the houses all of their ancestors ever owned, see Americans and Dutch and English making bank fixing up these old houses, and they, the Portuguese, start selling their heritage off to the greedy Dutch, English, and Americans, and all the Portuguese families are priced out of the market. Then the right-wing candidates come, screaming about immigrants, and all the people who can't afford homes vote for THEM instead of the socialists.

You might see if it’s possible to monopolize the blue tarp market in PT.

So continue to paint all your perceived enemies with your broad brush, dear.

How's Portugal this evening? I heard there were riots somewhere.
Oh, let me be more discerning, like you.

There aren't any riots here that I've heard about, my dear.
