I actually understand the logic of the descent in to hell story fairly clearly.

Why would people choose to believe if they weren't getting a "promise" to participate in the after life?

I agree fully which is why I don't belong to any specific religion anymore. I was a member of the LDS earlier in my life and all they did was bash Catholics' doctrine. I've had Baptists tell me to join their church for the correct path to God. Christian religions should be in harmony with each other, much like an orchestra, but because of all of these religions thinking that theirs is the correct one shit gets muddled like you said.
