found that right-wing extremists have been responsible for a higher percentage of politically motivated murders in the U.S. than left-wing extremists, both since 1975 and in the last five years. The institute also emphasizes that political violence is statistically rare in the U.S. and that Islamist extremist attacks caused the largest number of fatalities over the longer period due to the scale of 9/11.
Politically motivated murders (1975–September 10, 2025)
Excluding the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the Cato analysis found the following ideological breakdown of fatalities from politically motivated terrorist attacks:

• Right-wing extremists: 63% of deaths
• Left-wing extremists: 10% of deaths
• Islamist extremists: 23% of deaths

Politically motivated murders since 2020
For the period from January 1, 2020, to September 10, 2025, a different picture emerges from the smaller number of fatalities. Of the 81 people killed in politically motivated attacks, the breakdown is:

• Right-wing extremists: 54% of deaths (44 people)
• Left-wing extremists: 22% of deaths (18 people)
• Islamist extremists: 21% of deaths (17 people)
