I enjoy both of them, they top my favorite foods list but I prefer crab legs. But it's gotta be cooked just right or they lose all their taste. When I could find them in the Asian buffets they usually tasted like crap.

I don't think the two can be compared. I'm "meh" about crab cakes and I'm thinking that the way king crab is prepared and how it's served (fresh out of the pot vs sitting in a tub of hot water in a buffet station) has more to do with the taste then the type of crab. Although I'm not sure what you mean by type of crab- I'm mainly referring to Alaska King Crab not sure if there's a further subdivision.

King crab is the best by far but prices are sky high right now because Alaska closed it's King crab season plus we have embargoed all things Russia and Russia is the second largest producer. That basically just leaves king crab from the far north of Japan or the far north of Norway. Seriously, the stuff is like $40 per pound frozen now and you can forget about finding fresh.

That is why it is mostly snow crab leg clusters with a few dungeness crabs once in a while on menus. Around here (California) you can also find spider crab (marketed as California King Crab even though it is not king crab), box crab, and rarely Mexican swimmer crabs. Those three are only really sold at speciality stores run by commercial fishermen though.

Whenever I go south into Baja I always have two stops I make on the coast 4ight off highway 1 (the tourist roll road). The first is for lobster at Porto Neuvo and the second is Popotla for all your other seafood needs.
