MCCONNELL IN STABLE CONDITION, OBITUARY CONFIRMS
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Senate aides moved quickly Wednesday to reassure the public that Mitch McConnell remains in stable condition after several alarming reports, noting that his obituary described him as “peaceful, dignified and surrounded by loved ones.”
“The obituary was very encouraging,” one aide said. “It used words like ‘resting,’ ‘at peace’ and ‘no longer suffering,’ which, medically speaking, sounds far better than most recent updates.”
The statement came after days of confusion surrounding McConnell’s health, public appearances and a growing number of Republicans claiming to have held productive 20-minute conversations with him. Staff members now believe at least some of those conversations may have been conducted with a framed photograph, an unplugged phone or a Senate coat rack wearing his glasses.
McConnell’s office emphasized that the obituary should not be viewed as evidence that anything is wrong.
“People are reading too much into the dates, the funeral arrangements and the phrase ‘a life well lived,’” the office said. “Those are standard biographical details routinely prepared for any senator who may wish to continue serving several additional terms.”
Doctors have not issued a formal update, but the obituary noted that McConnell “passed quietly,” which aides interpreted as confirmation that he experienced no major scheduling conflicts.
Senate Republicans also pointed to the obituary’s long list of accomplishments as proof that McConnell remains fully capable of performing his current duties, including blocking legislation, avoiding direct questions and standing perfectly still during moments of national crisis.
Scott Jennings said he had personally reviewed the obituary for nearly 20 minutes and came away convinced McConnell was “sharp, engaged and deeply committed to the future of the Republican Party.”
President Donald Trump also released a statement praising McConnell’s recovery.
“Mitch is doing very well, maybe better than ever,” Trump wrote. “His obituary said many beautiful things about him, not as many as mine will say about me, but still very strong. I spoke to him for 20 minutes. He did not interrupt once.”
Funeral home officials declined to comment on whether McConnell had reviewed the final draft, although one employee said no objections had been received.
For now, Senate leadership says McConnell will remain under observation, listed as stable and expected to return for the next important party-line vote, whether physically, spiritually or by unanimous consent.
