Europe has always been vulnerable to invasions/migrations of undesireables from ancient and even prehistoric times.
The mass migrations of Muslims is not that much different in that regard.

I think North America doesn't have the same problem simply because it has too large oceans beside it to keep them out.
At least a place like Canada, which is the physical size of Europe, has such a small population that we still have enough personal space to establish our own barriers.
