I thought one way the US government could have handled this situation is to provide limited legalization to gainfully employed migrant workers in steady jobs with renewable non immigrant 1 yr work visas. However it would not be a pathway to citizenship and it would only be in restricted low level jobs. not skilled union trades jobs nor professional occupations. plus these workers would be required to report to immigration once a month to ensure they were abiding by the laws.

And certain restrictions would apply such as they couldn't own land nor get US drivers licenses. theyd have to get a DL in their country of origin and then apply for 1 year renewable international driving permits while abiding by US laws.

The only exception for citizenship would be serving in the military for at least 7 years during which time they wouldn't be eligible for government benefits or pensions during their time as non citizens in the US military.

Also if they wanted to access US medical or educational services theyd pay out of state international fees for themselves or their children.

In exchange for these new rights, there would no longer be any more citizenship by birthright. especially for illegal migrants or any offspring born to them while in the US. Both Australia & the UK already abolished it.

Any of these ideas sound appealing to you @Courier 6 ?

I dont think the US should give away citizenship or permanent residency for free but by establishing boundaries for migrants it prevents US citizens from being overrun by illegal immigration.
