"We're gonna be selling a gold card, you have a green card, this is a gold. We're gonna be putting a price on that card of about $5 million, and that's gonna give you green card privileges plus it's gonna be a route to citizenship," Trump said. "Wealthy people will be coming into our country by buying this card. They'll be wealthy and they'll be successful and they'll be spending a lot of money and paying a lot of taxes and employing a lot of people."
Trump added that it is possible could qualify for the gold cards, which were branded as “somewhat like a green card, but at a higher level of sophistication."
Trump said that he hopes his administration would be able to roll out these new "gold cards" within the next two weeks.
Users on X were quick to point out what they saw as the hypocrisy and ridiculousness of this move, amid Trump's ongoing efforts to carry out mass deportations of undocumented immigrants throughout the country.
"So much for ‘ give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free’ Give me your millionaires only. Unreal," one user wrote on X.
"Dumbass idea meant to enable Russian oligarchs and other terrible people to enter the United States without much issues," another user wrote.
This announcement from Trump comes amid the president's upending of U.S. foreign policy as it pertains to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Over the last several days Trump has doubled down on comments he made about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, calling the European leader a 'dictator," while refusing to levy the same criticism against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"I don't use those words lightly, I think we're going to see how it all works out," Trump said on Monday during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron.
This all comes after the U.S. voted against a United Nations resolution condemning Russian's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.
Trump said on Monday that he hoped that the war could end within weeks and that Zelenskyy would soon come to the U.S. to sign a deal giving America access to Ukraine’s critical minerals, which are used in key technology.
Trump is pressing the economic deal to help repay some of the $180 billion in American aid for Kyiv since the start of the war — tens of billions of which is being spent in the U.S. to replenish older weapons sent to Ukraine.
“It looks like we’re getting very close,” Trump told reporters of the minerals deal before his meeting with Macron. He said Zelenskyy could potentially visit Washington this week or next to sign it.
