STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) _ The HIV-positive man sought by police for allegedly having unprotected sex with dozens of women apparently is an Iranian using the identity of a dead American, police said Thursday.
The manhunt, now extended to neighboring Denmark, has been given extensive coverage in Swedish newspapers, TV and radio, prompting a flood of phone calls to police from women who had contact with him. Some of the victims are thought to be married and are terrified they may have inadvertently passed HIV to their spouses.
Police initially identified the man as James Patric Kimball of the United States, but Interpol later informed them that the man is Mehdi Tayeb, 35, an Iranian citizen using Kimball’s identity.
About 380 women have reported having sex with him, according to reports Thursday. One married woman had contacted police in tears after hearing of the manhunt on a local radio station. She confessed she had anal intercourse with Tayeb and that the sex was consensual. The frantic victim admitted she has since had intercourse twice with her spouse and may have unknowingly infected him. She is being comforted by the husband.
Another woman visited Tayeb's apartment after he claimed to be an American celebrity with links to the Kardashian family and offered to work as a party-arranger for her wedding anniversary. He groped her buttocks and attempted to kiss her. When she refused he persisted and eventually the victim agreed to have sex with him. Police are unsure how many of the women who bedded Tayeb have contracted HIV.
Tayeb has been charged in Sweden with rape and grave assault. The latter charge has been used by Swedish authorities to prosecute people who engage in unprotected sex while knowingly infected with HIV.
Tayeb also is wanted in the United States on charges of fraud and handling of stolen goods, Swedish police said.
