I posted a rather comprehensive history of the Russias a few weeks ago. Ukraine is one of the historical Russias. The current hostilities between the Russian Federation and Ukraine is an internecine civil war between cousins. It's none of our business, never was, and we should never have involved ourselves to begin with.
Had the Ukrainians not tried to whore themselves into NATO, Moscow may not have felt so threatened that they felt their only recourse was to invade before that became a fait accompli, and Putin figured the best time to do that was when we had an animated corpse in the White House.
