Oh stop. Research has conclusively shown that a healthy dose of tobacco smoke each day is 100% protective against that nasty ol Coronavirus.

Nicotine takers weathered the covid virus better than non nicotine takers though... it's in the studies.

I recall hearing of this. Even if it does, for reasons hypothesized below, it is not 100% and the overall health risked outweigh the benefits. Further there is no conclusive evidence that it is protective as some thought.

A pack of Gauloises a day keeps the doctor away?

The nicotinic hypothesis was formulated quickly: a month after our own university moved to working from home, a group in Paris proposed their theory in a

promptly published in Comptes Rendus Biologies. At the time, it looked as if smokers were protected from the infection. In

, smokers were underrepresented in patients hospitalized with the new disease. Doctors were seeing fewer of them than they would expect based on the percentage of the population that smokes—and on the fact that smoking generally predisposes you to a number of respiratory infections, including

. The Parisian medical researchers wondered what could explain this.

We knew at the time that the coronavirus binds to the ACE2 receptors expressed on the outside of cells in our airways, like a key fitting into a lock. But because COVID was often accompanied by an inflammatory component, it was hypothesized that the virus could also bind to another type of receptor: nicotinic acetylcholine receptors or nAChRs for short. These receptors usually interact with the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, but molecules in some snake venoms and strains of the rabies virus can also bind to them because of a short sequence of amino acids. And this sequence was shared, the Parisian team found, by the spike protein that the coronavirus displayed at its surface like a crown of thorns. The new virus could thus, in theory, displace acetylcholine from nAChRs and cause damage.

The hypothesis went on that, because nicotine binds to these same receptors very, very strongly, smokers were protected from the more severe effects of the coronavirus. The spike protein wanted to access this lock, but nicotine keys were already jammed in there and they were in no hurry to leave. Hence the otherwise unsound proposal, in the team’s April 2020 paper, that “nicotine may be suggested as a potential preventative agent against COVID-19 infection.” French doctors were not telling their countrymen to pick up a pack of Gauloises; they highlighted that nicotine is a “drug of abuse” and that smoking is bad, but they wondered about “nicotinic agents” in controlled settings. Perhaps nicotine patches.

The scientific evidence for this hypothesis is, at this point, artificial and far from conclusive. A team has shown that, when

to predict what will happen, the coronavirus’ spike protein

to these nicotinic receptors. Researchers have also forced cells in the lab (namely human kidney cells and frog egg cells) to express certain types of nicotinic receptors and put them in a solution containing a fragment of the spike protein created in the lab, and the

. On either side of the debate, fans can pick the papers that support their position, but what the data reveals is that if this hypothesis is indeed true, it comes with a number of caveats.

Speaking of caveats, those early reports that smokers were underrepresented in COVID hospital wards were

, using data sets where the smoking status of a significant portion of hospitalized patients was missing or where people who had recently stopped smoking were categorized not as smokers but as “former smokers.”

Oh, and the French team that proposed the nicotinic hypothesis and suggested that maybe nicotine could prevent COVID-19? Its star scientist, Jean-Pierre Changeux, received

Le Monde.

Some people with long COVID report that nicotine patches

Nicotine from tobacco does not protect against Covid-19, a new Swedish study has found. However, the study also adds to the body of evidence suggesting that smokers are somehow protected from Covid-19 infection. It remains unclear why.

I'm just going to guess here - distancing? Smokers are insulated to a degree because who wants to be anywhere near them. I'll wager the unbathed also are protected. Take Reggie for example.

Reports noted phenomena including "deathbed conversions", in which vaccine opponents reportedly changed their minds and began encouraging vaccination before dying, with these claims meeting continued skepticism by vaccination opponents; and on groups of deaths within specific demographics, such as anti-vaccine radio hosts.

Reporting on the phenomenon

A number of websites or social media outlets list such deaths, including "[a] website called Sorry Antivaxxer, which catalogues the COVID-19 deaths of people who had publicly posted their rejection of the vaccine", as well as "the Twitter account

The Hill article on the death of the televangelist noted three other media figures who had died of the disease, describing them as "conservative media leaders who caught COVID-19 and eventually died from the virus after refusing to take a vaccine and flouted anti-vaccine rhetoric".

Reporting of deathbed conversions

A number of news outlets also reported on

of opponents of vaccination or their peers, with some of those dying using their final days and hours to urge their followers and loved ones to be vaccinated. For example, The Hill reported that when one of the anti-vaccine talk radio hosts became seriously ill with COVID-19, he texted a friend to urge her to get vaccinated, telling her, "I wish I had gotten it",

while

similarly reported that another radio host, who earlier "had expressed skepticism of the COVID-19 vaccine" had "changed his mind and urged friends and family members to get vaccinated from his hospital bed".

The New York Times reported on the father of one such victim becoming an ardent proponent of vaccination.

This was also reported in

in October 2021, in a piece which said that "[a]mong the people admitted to hospital with severe respiratory failure from COVID-19 pneumonia who have subsequently died, some had previously held strong anti-vaccine beliefs. The Washington Post noted that "[t]he narrative is even more potent when the victim expresses a dying wish for others to get vaccinated, and regrets their decision not to".

Whether reporting of these deaths actually encourages opponents of vaccination to change their position is unclear, but it has been asserted that proponents of vaccination "have expressed thanks for providing a record of anti-vaccine deaths that have helped them convince skeptics to get the shots".

In August 2021, a number of American

Was just a stupid question.
No it was not a stupid question.
I in effect asked why he asked a question the core message of which was a falsehood.
There are more than one possible answers to why someone would ask why liberals are no longer into natural remedies.
Liberty1976 said:
Whatever happened to liberals being into natural remedies?
Answer - many are. (there was nothing in the OP - the article - to suggest otherwise, nor is there any evidence to suggest that it is generally true.
Question - Why do you ask? (no reply from the person asked)
Possible reasons for the original question being asked:
1) it's what trolls do
2) The person, Liberty1976 is actually so ignorant he thinks, in his black and white world, that finding a vaccine useful in a pandemic means that liberals no longer use naturopathic remedies where and when they are useful.
3) Certainly there may be other reasons for having asked.

Question in illustration posed to Prowler, who soon after the initial exchange proceeded to make an ass of himself:
3) During the middle ages in Europe and after the immigration into the Americas by Europeans tell me how nature's remedies and healthy diet and lifestyle shut down the Black Death and Smallpox epidemics.
(Evidently Prowler thinks that had everyone donned their nosegays and eaten corn Covid would have been defeated in a matter of days)
Suggestion made to Prowler:
5) Maybe do some study and understand how human immunology works and why oranges aren't protective against measles. (the bit about oranges being comedy...hint for the humorless)

Prowler also again refused to answer a direct question about whether he was a total moron or a complete idiot.
There's only two options and he's soooo retarded he couldn't chose. Flip a coin, asshole.

Pardon the small misquotes while preserving meaning.

Prowler had found this exchange so confounding he's spent 3 or 4 pages trying to unravel its complexities.

No it was not a stupid question.

Sure it was. The point he made was obvious.

Not to mention that his question was rhetorical - meaning he was not really asking anything. He was making a point.

I in effect asked why he asked a question the core message of which was a falsehood.

You are a mess!!!

I will just correct this part, because I know you are trying to convince yourself it is true...but deep down you know it is not.

"there was nothing in the OP - the article - to suggest otherwise"

His point had nothing to do with the article. Nothing.

He was addressing this part of the OP:

Sorry your infant has whooping cough, have you even tried patchouli oil?

Do not pretend to be so stupid that you could not figure that out for yourself!!!!

What "liberals" are no longer into natural remedies?
See if you can sift through the article and find the answer,
or maybe you can conduct a survey and establish exactly when this happened and why liberals no longer are into natural remedies.
"no longer" first of all implies that they were individually and/or collectively "into" them.
Who among liberals are no longer "into" natural remedies? Some of them, all of them?
What do the studies and surveys say?
Nope - there were no dots to connect the silly troll question to the subject of Captain Brain Wermz being fucked up.

Now if it seemed that admin was mocking the use of natural remedies you have 2 issues (3 really) to overcome here. 1) admin may never have been "into" natural remedies so "no longer" wouldn't apply to him individually even if 2) he was a liberal (now the issue here may be the small vs capital L), but one way of the other there is an assumption that admin is, as I would put it "a Liberal", which as I had previously pointed out, having known him through the netz for going on 20 years would not be my characterization.
Bonus 3) also - it is possible that one could scoff at the use of natural remedies (while still valuing them at other times) in the case of a pandemic, a pathogen to which there is no collective immunity to such as I alluded was the case of the Black Death in Europe (50 million dead) or Smallpox ravaging the native population in the Americas (55 million dead). During the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918/19 Elderberry was one of the only remedies used and available at the time. 50 million died.
Having a healthy immune system achieved through healthy diet and exercise is important. I'm a practitioner, but it won't fully mitigate genetic flaws or environmental stressors or fully/reliably combat previously uncontacted virus' etc. It's just stupid thinking to believe it will. Had there been a know effective non-pharma remedy to Covid, I would have opted for it, but there wasn't (and fish aquarium pills don't count). It is never no mind to me that I despise Big Pharma for good reason. When they have a useful product, I will use it. I would no more boycott it at the risk of life than I would boycott my landlord for rent gouging and go homeless, or starve by boycotting grocery store prices.

So, sorry, dear - no dots to connect.
