I recall hearing of this. Even if it does, for reasons hypothesized below, it is not 100% and the overall health risked outweigh the benefits. Further there is no conclusive evidence that it is protective as some thought.

The nicotinic hypothesis was formulated quickly: a month after our own university moved to working from home, a group in Paris proposed their theory in a promptly published in Comptes Rendus Biologies. At the time, it looked as if smokers were protected from the infection. In , smokers were underrepresented in patients hospitalized with the new disease. Doctors were seeing fewer of them than they would expect based on the percentage of the population that smokes—and on the fact that smoking generally predisposes you to a number of respiratory infections, including , , and . The Parisian medical researchers wondered what could explain this.We knew at the time that the coronavirus binds to the ACE2 receptors expressed on the outside of cells in our airways, like a key fitting into a lock. But because COVID was often accompanied by an inflammatory component, it was hypothesized that the virus could also bind to another type of receptor: nicotinic acetylcholine receptors or nAChRs for short. These receptors usually interact with the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, but molecules in some snake venoms and strains of the rabies virus can also bind to them because of a short sequence of amino acids. And this sequence was shared, the Parisian team found, by the spike protein that the coronavirus displayed at its surface like a crown of thorns. The new virus could thus, in theory, displace acetylcholine from nAChRs and cause damage.
The hypothesis went on that, because nicotine binds to these same receptors very, very strongly, smokers were protected from the more severe effects of the coronavirus. The spike protein wanted to access this lock, but nicotine keys were already jammed in there and they were in no hurry to leave. Hence the otherwise unsound proposal, in the team’s April 2020 paper, that “nicotine may be suggested as a potential preventative agent against COVID-19 infection.” French doctors were not telling their countrymen to pick up a pack of Gauloises; they highlighted that nicotine is a “drug of abuse” and that smoking is bad, but they wondered about “nicotinic agents” in controlled settings. Perhaps nicotine patches.
The scientific evidence for this hypothesis is, at this point, artificial and far from conclusive. A team has shown that, when to predict what will happen, the coronavirus’ spike protein to these nicotinic receptors. Researchers have also forced cells in the lab (namely human kidney cells and frog egg cells) to express certain types of nicotinic receptors and put them in a solution containing a fragment of the spike protein created in the lab, and the . On either side of the debate, fans can pick the papers that support their position, but what the data reveals is that if this hypothesis is indeed true, it comes with a number of caveats.
Speaking of caveats, those early reports that smokers were underrepresented in COVID hospital wards were , using data sets where the smoking status of a significant portion of hospitalized patients was missing or where people who had recently stopped smoking were categorized not as smokers but as “former smokers.”

The New York Times reported on the father of one such victim becoming an ardent proponent of vaccination. This was also reported in in October 2021, in a piece which said that "[a]mong the people admitted to hospital with severe respiratory failure from COVID-19 pneumonia who have subsequently died, some had previously held strong anti-vaccine beliefs. Once critically ill, some have changed their minds and shared their stories on social media as a warning".The Washington Post noted that "[t]he narrative is even more potent when the victim expresses a dying wish for others to get vaccinated, and regrets their decision not to". Whether reporting of these deaths actually encourages opponents of vaccination to change their position is unclear, but it has been asserted that proponents of vaccination "have expressed thanks for providing a record of anti-vaccine deaths that have helped them convince skeptics to get the shots".

In August 2021, a number of American hosts who had discouraged COVID-19 vaccination, or expressed skepticism toward the COVID-19 vaccine, died from COVID-19 complications. These included 65-year-old Marc Bernier, self-nicknamed "Mr. Antivax", from ; 65-year-old , who referred to the pandemic as a "SCAM DEMIC"; Jimmy DeYoung Sr, an octogenarian Christian radio host who decried the vaccine as a form of government control; and 61-year-old , who compared vaccination status badges worn by medical workers with the which German Jews were ordered to wear by the Nazis. There are more than one possible answers to why someone would ask why liberals are no longer into natural remedies.

Having a healthy immune system achieved through healthy diet and exercise is important. I'm a practitioner, but it won't fully mitigate genetic flaws or environmental stressors or fully/reliably combat previously uncontacted virus' etc. It's just stupid thinking to believe it will. Had there been a know effective non-pharma remedy to Covid, I would have opted for it, but there wasn't (and fish aquarium pills don't count). It is never no mind to me that I despise Big Pharma for good reason. When they have a useful product, I will use it. I would no more boycott it at the risk of life than I would boycott my landlord for rent gouging and go homeless, or starve by boycotting grocery store prices.
