Little Story About Online Publishers

[The Question]

So, back in 2012, I self-published a nonfiction book, sort of a 'guide' to vaping for smokers looking to quit.

Did pretty modestly, so I figured I'd amplify the exposure by providing free copies to a couple online "magazines" covering the topic. Reviews were great, and then -- a thing I did not expect: They hired me on as a staff writer. Cool.

So from 2012 to 2019, I made a few extra Benjamins a month reviewing vaping products, providing commentary on the regulatory landscape surrounding the industry, etc.

Then, in 2019, the FDA, pushed by the Pharmaceutical industry and "public health" NGOs, shat all over the industry. Now, these "magazines" weren't making their revenue via subscriptions; they were making money by selling advertising space. Industry gets shat on, advertising dollars dry up, which for we staff writers at Vape News Magazine and Canadian Vapor Magazine (for the latter, I was the only staff writer) left us high and dry with unpaid invoices. Canadian Vapor left me holding an invoice for $140, Vape News for $750.

So when it comes to dealing with online "publishers" again, I'm a bit leery these days.

I was getting into Delta 8 edibles last year, we had brought a supply from the US when me moved to Greece. It was a nice high, better than anything I ever got with smoking weed. It's difficult to get it here in Greece, although I was able to order something similar on line it just wasn't the same.

When I returned to the US for a few weeks last April, I stopped into one of the many smoke shops and inquired about a supply of D8 edibles, the helpful woman said they're really expensive, about $100 for a jar of about 50. I bought them anyway but on her advice I got a vape pen and a D8 cartridge which she said was good for 100s of highs and only cost about $30. That's a huge difference!

I met up with an old buddy and we drove up to Universal Islands of Adventure to ride coasters and do the 3d rides all high on D8. It was a terrible experience, I felt like my head was going to explode, everything was happening too fast, I was too high to enjoy the experience, it ruined my entire day. Plus the vaping made it too easy to keep the high going.

As I took yet another hit off the vape a teenager came up to me and said "hey man can I get a hit off that?". I said to him you know what, take the whole thing, it's almost full of Delta 8, just be careful with how much you smoke. I also gave the unopened jar of D8 edibles I had purchased for $100 to some friends of my buddy that we met up with on our drive to Orlando.

I never touched the stuff after that day.
