Greater than 10% kill rate. Why so high?
Sara Palin used to be the Governor of Alaska, fwiw.

Oh, I just figured Cons would rail on about Socialized Medicine.
..and it would be really fun to watch them blow a jugular.

45-20 at the Half.

I just hope Baylor is able to maintain their momentum in the 2nd half.

Socialized medicine would force Loktrd to have to wait in line for that penis enlargement surgery. Sad!

I don't think socialized medicine could/would ever come to America.

There are too many against it & the insurance companies are too well entrenched in the system to make it possible.

Their lobbyists would/will shoot it down like they did every other time.

Currently i pay $0 for Socialized healthcare in Canada.

Realistically however, I don't think it can last.

At some point, it'll be time to pay the Piper.

So may as well enjoy it while it lasts.

..but that didn't answer my question re: the high mortality in Canada - taking your figures as accurate.

PS: we already have socialized medicine in the US. We just haven't completely cut the fat and riff-raff out yet.

I think the death rate is much higher in the United States than Canada according to this:

3 times higher?

And most of the fatalities are in Old Folks homes in Ontario or Quebec.

The rest of the country hasn't been hit nearly as hard.

I think it has to do with population density & climate.

The more people, the greater the chance of catching COVID.

And the closer one is to the coasts, they're less vulnerable.

This is an Old Map, but the latest stats more or less follow this trend:

So you think we have a 30% mortality rate?

We (the US) have a half a million deaths.
That would imply about 1.65 million infections.

Does that sound about right?

..but actually there are about 30 million verified cases
and recent analysis say that number may be low.

Don't have immediate data on resolved cases.

Did I misinterpret what you wrote?

okay - recovered in US - nearly 24 million, 568 deaths.

around 2 % mortality.
Many other percent with lingering long term illness.

Canada according to you is 5x worse. Correct?

PS: I think Baylor's got this thing - Up 20 with 3 to play

According to that worldmeters link, the USA has about 7,000,000 active recorded cases right now.

Not sure what the unaccounted ones are.

Canada has 55,000. So if our population was the size of the US, that would be 550,000

So on a proportionate basis, USA currently has 10x more the active cases than Canada if that link is to be believed.

But...10x more the population density also results in much greater incidence and severity I think.

So many more people breathing in each others germas...of course its gonna be worse.

Okay - so yes, Canada is about 2.5 % mortality rate.

Still, population density does matter.

In US greater than 50% now live in Urban areas.
What does that number look like in Canada?

Answer:

81.48 percent

Urbanization in Canada 2019. The statistic shows the degree of urbanization in Canada from 2009 to 2019 and details the percentage of the entire population, living in urban areas. In 2019, 81.48 percent of the total population in Canada lived in cities.

So in taking a look at it overall - I'd say Canada has done favorably well compared to the US.

Though according to this site:
83%

It is estimated that 83% of the U.S. population lives in urban areas, up from 64% in 1950. By 2050, 89% of the U.S. population and 68% of the world population is projected to live in urban areas.

Well fuck it, I say
Let these fuckers go smash themselves together so the most common phrase in ever language is
"Excuse me" whenever one leaves their dwelling.

It's all luck.

And the countries with the most people/highest population density, generally got hit hardest this time round.

So where more people often makes a nation stronger, this time it was to their detriment/disadvantage.

As of today I officially got my second shot. Sure, it will be two weeks before I am officially "fully vaccinated" and even longer for the rest of my family (all got first shot but waiting on second) but I think a trip to Hawaii or Las Vegas maybe in our near future.

COVID-19 vaccines may reduce transmission, experts say, but vaccinated Americans still need to wear masks in public. Here's why.
Adrianna Rodriguez, USA TODAY
Sat, April 3, 2021, 12:49 PM

When COVID-19 vaccinations began, U.S. health officials encouraged vaccinated Americans to continue wearing masks in public because scientists were still unsure if they could carry the virus that causes the disease after being inoculated.
Recent results from real-world studies show the COVID-19 vaccines protect against asymptomatic infection, suggesting they also drastically reduce virus transmission.
But health experts still recommend wearing masks in public, regardless of vaccination status, as more research is needed to confirm whether vaccinated people can spread the virus and as variants become more prevalent in the U.S. and states see cases spikes.
The nuanced messages are understandably confusing, especially to pandemic-fatigued Americans eager to return to normal. As hopeful news continues to emerge, health experts urge people to remain vigilant a little while longer.
“Because vaccinations do dramatically reduce transmission, eventually the CDC will issue new

,” said Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. “But it won’t happen until the summer at the earliest, and all this depends on getting the B.1.1.7 variant (first identified in the U.K.) under control and expanding vaccination coverage.”
Preliminary information from Israel found people who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine did not develop COVID-19 symptoms or transmit the disease,

“It looks like 90% reduction in asymptomatic transmission. So that’s really good,” Hotez said when the data was made available. Practically speaking, that means the vaccine may enable people to produce antibodies that reduce virus levels in the nose and the mouth, making them less likely to be contagious.
Indoor, small group guidelines:

showing its mRNA vaccine with German partner BioNTech was still more than 90% effective six months after receiving a second dose, even against the B.1.351 variant first identified in South Africa.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's leading expert in infectious diseases, expressed optimism during a White House briefing Friday but added more data is needed to confirm the vaccines' effectiveness on variants.
"So the bottom line message is that vaccines work very well in the real-world setting," he said. "Very, very good reason for everyone to get vaccinated as soon as it becomes available to you."
While these studies are promising for ending the pandemic, health experts say it's too soon for the nation to ditch masks and return to normal.
