I have to pay taxes in the US and Portugal, and I can't even call the IRS. What do I get for my tax dollars, exactly?

LB. Don’t you take advantage of the tax benefit for living offshore, and the fact that you can file later in the year? As for calling the IRS. Why not use SKYPE? I’d never give my citizenship

I do use Skype. They keep telling me that they're not answering the phone.

Yeah, I don't have to file till June here, but I need my US taxes done by then. I need some info and I need to get my online account operational. I can't do that online because they want to text a code to the phone number on file, which I no longer have. Or mail it to my US address. I can't even call them to switch to my Portuguese address, because they're not answering the phone and I can't access my online account, which I need to talk to them about, but they're not answering the phone.

I did reach them on the phone once, and they told me that, due to the pandemic, they were only answering certain kinds of questions, and they simply refused to answer the question I had. After being on hold for almost an hour. WTF.

you will have to use snail mail to tell them of
your new address..... NOT the phone.

You only pay taxes on both if you ea over a certain amount. Last I heard it was around $90,000. If you are retired and making that much on a pension then I want public employee pensions gutted.

No you pay taxes if you make money period. For example: if you take out your IRA retirement and you are over 80 you may almost a 20% tax on that money. The gov will get their money regardless. This President is going to spike what we pay anyway, minds well get used to it.

Pensions cut off when that person dies. I’m not sure you have to pay taxes on that. I’m not sure what I’m saying regarding pensions is right either but it’s what I have heard.

So I was supposed to address the death of my accountant before it happened? And I was supposed to expect a pandemic that would cause the IRS to stop answering their phones? Both? Damn! I am stupid because I'm not psychic. Silly me.

You have no fucking idea how much paperwork is involved in emigrating. Judge not, you areshole.
Excuses are useless, dipshit.

You migrated across the globe after supporting the policies that turned your home state into a toilet, sold your property at a premium while you pontificate to the rest of us about the evils of capitalism and now you neglected to ensure you could properly login to the IRS website prior to leaving US borders. Cry me a fucking river, Princess Teardrop

So now what is the IRS supposed to do, dispense with security protocol because YOU are inconvenienced, stupid and unwilling to accept responsibility for your own lack of proper planning?

I'm not left though.

An hour is nothing for a government office. When we were trying to sort out my wife's unemployment payments we would routinely be put on hold for 3-4 hours. No joke.

Check out the overseas tax credit because your first $90,000 or so should be tax free (with certain exceptions) wrt income tax.

Here's a YouTube channel I watch:

The Guy, Andrew Henderson was a US citizen who relinquished it. He gave it up largely for tax purposes.

I'm not suggesting that you do anything of the sort., but he has some interesting stories and tidbits of advice.

The sms thing is super annoying. Try calling someone stateside and have them tell you the code.

Also, it costs a fair smount to renounce citizenship. I wouldn't advise that unless you are rich.

Yeah. I thought about calling someone. I'll probably resort to that, but the problem is, there's a time limit on it, so whoever gets it has to send it to me fairly quickly.

I didn't know it cost money to renounce. Fuck them.

That's incorrect. It's different in every country, you know.

I just realized you are talking about income earned overseas by an expat. I'm not earning an income here. You have no idea what you're taliing about. ALL income earned in the US is taxed exactly as if you live in the US, and then you have to pay your resident country's taxes, whatever they are, and that varies wildly country to country.

I've been tempted to move out of the country.

I really can't, though. I have too much invested here and I'm not leaving my minions(cats) and moving them overseas would be a huge hassle....and my kids dont want to leave their friends and shit.

Were either of your parents immigrants? My father was born in the UK which means I qualify for UK citizenship by birth.
