I worked for a neurology center in 2014 and we were conducting tests on chimps because they have similar brains to humans. We inject drugs into their bloodstream and monitor changes in brain and intelligence. We have tried certain isomers of sex hormones and were working on nootropics when I parted. Our main subjects are getting 10-20 grams of piracetam a day.
This is lethal for a human their size. Some of them have fine results and improved intelligence but some got unwanted side effects.

Do you think this is ethical?

Feel free to ask me anything.

I am curious and interested in knowing more. Personally I think that animal testing shouldn't be done as animals cannot consent to the tests so technically they are unwilling subjects.

The problem of picking a random death row inmate is that not everyone who is convicted is actually guilty. Maybe use the paedos who admit that they're into kids. There are plenty of them who feel no shame for being the way that they are and even go as far as bragging about it.

I’m thinking of having my dog tested, she seems to know when we’re going for a walk and stuff
