Why Are The Illegal Migrants In The US Seemingly Getting Better Treatment Than Veterans?

These migrants seem to be getting some special treatment with housing, food debit cards etc. It seems as though the migrants are living better than some of the American citizens, like folks who served their country in the military for example. Shouldn't the focus be on helping the legal American citizens and their well being first? What is so special about the illegals?

Key word in your subject line, "Seemingly" The GOP likes to play the Patriotic card and extoll the virtues of our Veterans and then turn around and vote against (most)any Bill that will benefit the Vets.

The idea that the USA is taking better care of the fob brown people than the vets is simply not true. That is Right Wing hysterical raving.

Yes, I feel that they are slanted. Veterans get benefits that regular Americans don't get, ones they've earned by serving the country. VA health and GI bill being the most prominent.
And yet...there's sure a lot of homeless veterans in the US.

I guess too many took for granted that the military was like a steady job that provided them with security once they left the service, eh?

I suppose it's akin to homeless seniors who didn't think they'd have to work once they 'retired'.

Likewise, Ordinary retirees need a game plan too.
Pensions & even a healthy stack of money often aren't enough to fund their retirements.

There are a lot of homeless veterans. I would attribute that to co-morbidities of addiction and mental health. I'm sure their tours in our wars contribute significantly to those problems.

There are hundreds of thousands of homeless people in America, do you know what we are doing about it? We are making them "illegal" Vet's, Mothers, the elderly and babies, all of them.

The Supreme Court says cities can punish people for sleeping in public places

And yet, many ordinary non-military retirees can fall into the same trap.

Yes! There is a life after retirement and they have to be able to fund it.

Even in 'socialist' countries like Canada.

the State isn't and can't always take care of them

What is your actual point? You've leaped from homeless to retirees.

Further more conservative areas are working to disenfranchise the homeless.

They don't 'punish' people with fines for being homeless in Vancouver.
But occasionally the City uproots them and dismantles their homeless cities and orders them to disperse.

It isn't illegal for a homeless person to pitch at tent in a Vancouver park to sleep in overnight but I believe they have to leave by daylight.

We also have a problem with homelessness here, with the more 'respectable' ones sleeping in vans or even cars.

We've been doing that for a long time here, homeless build a "community" having no services like water sewage garbage, stuff stacks up and people complain, then the municipalities kick them down the road.

"Last call you don't have to go home (lol) but you can't stay here!"

I'm just pointing out neither veterans nor ordinary non military retirees should rely upon pensions or even a pile of money to see them through retirement. It's often not enough and they can run out of money real fast.

they need to have some transferable skills and side hustles once they get older.

Even in Canada where they appear to take care of them better.

American Corporations have for the most part done away with Pension systems, and turned that over to Wall Street via 401K's etc

I think this may in part be caused by unscruplous landlords continually raising the rents to all-time highs.

Sure, I agree that landlords are entitled to cover their costs, make a profit and raise the rent prices within reason. But what they have in the USA and now Canada is unbridled capitalism/greed. The Wild West of the Rentals market.

It words like this - somebody moves out of an apartment suite.
so the landlord jacks the new rent up 35% or more.
Of course the new tenants can barely afford the new prices/places, so now you need 2 tenants to a 1 BR apartment to cover the costs.
But once they can't afford it, price becomes too high for them, they move out, and another tenant moves in and the landlord raises the rent another 30%.

That's what happened in Vancouver.

Typical rent went from $1000/month or less to $3,000 in 10 years

So now rents/rent increases are out of control.

Just like many parts of the States, there's no true 'free market' for rentals anymore and the landlords know it. Most places now just have signs say "Sorry no vacancies' cuz nobody wants to move anymore cuz their rents will triple.

It's just one big racket, eh.

That's part of it, Wall Street and foreign speculators have been buying up homes and lands for several years now, squeezing the market.

I'm planning to move out of the city in the near future
At very least, a home away from home like a cottage in the countryside where RE is still a lot cheaper.
So if the SHTF which it very well could in the next 5, at least there'll be a place to escape to.

But I suppose as you say, the corporations and Wall Street will eventually find a way to corner that market too. It's still not too late tho. Ive noticed there are still some affordable places outside the city.

I mean, pay $200,000 for an acre of land fee simple out in the country seems a lot better value than paying $400,000 for a 1 BR city apartment which the buyer never gets to really 'own'. they give them 99 or even 45 year leases now.

Actually if i paid rent every month for the rest of my life, it'd be cheaper than buying an apartment now. so there's no incentive to buy in the city anymore.

I don't know that these homeless Vets are relying on any pension at all. I think you only get a military pension if they choose the military as a career.

You're making a lot of assumptions here, Joe.

Housing is cheaper in Red States, because they're red states, lacking in jobs etc that support a vibrant economy.

The US appears to becoming less politically and socially stable with each passing year..

It might be a do to buy an inexpensive piece of RE in the US at some point, but I wouldn't sink too much like life savings there. Treat it more like a high risk venture. Especially since I'm not an American. As a foreigner I wouldn't invest too much there to minimize the risk.

Why don't you invest in your own country and buy property there?
